I'm Canadian, though I live in the Seattle area. Center pin reels are rare down here but I've seen a few.

Are center pins also called knuckle-busters? Like an oversized fly reel? I'm from Washington, but fish for salmon in BC. Took my Penns up the first time up and saw all the locals using knuckle busters. I gave it a go on borrowed equipment, and it was INCREDIBLE! 30# Kings were ten times the fun on the reels you guys use. My buddy and I both bought that set-up and hope to use it next time.
By the way, hows the salmon season looking so far? Our trip is in a few weeks.
Also, any suggestions for BC salmon report pages or bulletin boards?
Thanks for the info...

I went with my brother and dad to the west side of vancouver island, in the middle of june. We did real well on kings and halibut. The kings weren't huge, but there were a good number running. weather was sporadic though as it usually is this that time of year. mike

How well do center pin reels cast? I'd like to try one sometime.

Center pin cast the same distances as bait casters but they also drift much better. another reason i like them is because they have a 1:1 ratio so if you turn the handle once they spool only spin's around once.

Never heard them called center pins, but yeah they do have that, we have always called them mooching reels. Lots of people here,(including myself)use them all the time. Sure makes fishing more enjoyable, especially if you use cut plug or bare spinner off of downrigger.

Center pins and mooching reels may look similer but center pins are ment for float fishing or bottom bounceing in rivers. I can cast a 1/16 oz. jig head under a float about 100 feet with my center pin!!

I know the Canucks use these reels for float fishing, downrigger fishing, everything. I use a fly setup with sinking line/live herring in the salt for kings and silvers and it is impossible to catch up with these bullets with the 1:1 ratio reels. I do alot better with say a 6:2:1. I'll take gears thank you.

Oh, any reports from summer run anglers? How are the Penninsula Rivers handling the run-off and what rivers are fishable? The Sky rises at night and drops during the heat of the day, some fish being caught.

Small Steelheader - Do you know what has happened to the Sportfishing BC site? I can not seem to get to any part of their web site anymore. Thanks for your help. Eddie
