Bob, I'm trying your egg cure on some Nootka salmon eggs. My question is can you freeze the eggs after they are cured, and if you can do you freeze them in the borax or can this dry them out? I have used a similar cure but never covered them in borax.
Also guys, what do you think of herring brines? Where I live the bait is generally frozen, and when it thaws out it isn't worth a [Bleeeeep!]. Any good recipies to keep frozen (or fresh) herring firm, bright and generally skookum? Thanks in advance. snit

Put your herring in a bucket of sea water and rock salt. I usually cut plug them all before hand. I also add ice occasionally on the hot days of summer. This will keep your herring fresh and firm for more than a day.
The one draw back....if you have any cuts on your hands, and I always do salmon fishing, you will definitely know it when you reach in that buacket! HOO BOY!

I also use the seawater and rock salt method for firming up herring, and it works great. You just have to make sure you don't add too much rock salt, as it will tend to turn your herring into jerky. Changing out the water every few hours on hot days keeps the water cool. E-mail me at work about your Nootka trip.
