Back in October/November my db trailer was totaled on I-5, I finally got everything I needed last week to start building a new one...the old trailer was 1/8th steel, I beefed the new one up too 3/16...
Steel= $350
Axle=$300
Galvanizing =?

New baker trailer=$1700+tax

Demoing the old trailer

Quality baker trailer fit up/weld

The inside of a toreflex axle

Took a lot of force to do this to the axle!

Plans for the new trailer, this picture I hadn't put the dimensions in but you get the idea

Steels cut, almost ready to go

Tail lights cut in

Putting it together

Got 90% welded, still have to make the side steps, and axle brackets/ misc

Lookin good! The quality is showing.

Any idea how to get it galvanized though? bring it to a place and they dunk it?

Best,

Yeah, it gets dunked, ill have to drill a bunch of holes on the underside, threw work its .68 cents a pound of steel, I'm just not sure what the total weight of the trailer will be yet

Looking good. Myself and a welding friend of mine have built a lot of trailers. It is indeed a bunch of work.

Don't forget to triangleate(sp) it to the ball also. The trailer I have now had been sprayed with some kind of galvanized stuff that I had done and it's still lookinig like new after 10-12 years or so. Not sure if they still do that here in Hoquiam or not. It was well worth the price.

I also designed 2 - 3"" rollers that the boat sits on so it is so easy to roll it on and off. Of course, I'm not youmg like you.

If you don't get it galvinized spray a rattle can or 2 inside the 2x3 tubing as most trailers rust from the inside out.

Please keep us informed during the build. I also have another idea you should do but I would have to show you.

Yeah, I triangulated from the frame to the middle of the tongue, checked it to the front and back of the main box, I'm 1/32 out of square over 126"... I think it will ride decent wink I was thinking about two rollers, and just not using the uhmw on the cross members
I got 8 hours into the new one so far

Sometimes it can be hard to license a homebuilt trailer.

I've only had one experience with trying to register a homebuilt trailer. It was shockingly easy. You make an appointment to take it in to be inspected by the State Patrol. They slap a VIN on it and you give them a few bucks. I was in and out in probably 10 minutes and they didn't really check anything (lights or road-worthiness).

I suspect the easy/hard issue has everything to do with the actual State Patrol employee that is doing the check. If you catch them on a bad day, they could make it virtually impossible. Maybe I just got lucky?

It would be easy to just punch my old vin into my new trailer, but I'm doing this legal,

I went to the wsp website and printed off the requirements and I'm a WABO (Washington association of building officials) certified welder.
So I don't think I'll have any problems

It does look very good.....Welding skills and the right equipment, in the right hands.....makes a job look easy!!!

Keep us posted.....the "galvanized" bit is so very important, I had two "painted trailers".....every summer, sand and re-paint, spray can paint jobs.....NEVER AGAIN !!!!!!!!
