For mainline, I prefer Trilene XT because it is less prone to stretch and weaken when you hang up on the bottom. It's resistance to stretching is why I like it. I have used Maxima for mainline and though it is extremely abrasion resistant, I have had bad experiences with it stretching after a hangup. I've had to remove up to 15 ft. of line because it became so weak from stretching and that got old quickly.

Most quality lines are adequate but I have fished with all of them enough to be satisfied with Trilene.

For leaders, I use Maxima Chameleon hands down because of it's abrasion resistance. There are few lines on the market that are as stiff and tough as this line. It is a time tested product and if you sample most guys on the river, you'll see they use this also. Again, there are other quality lines but these are my choices from 20 plus years of steelheading.

Hope that helps.

My 2 cents:

Casting: Maxima Ultragreen. Tough, stiff, but not two stiff. I prefer ultragreen to chameleon because the latter shows up like a beacon in clear water when the suns out. I haven't had the problem of stretching like the last post.

Spinning: The new Gamakatsu co-polymer is great. Its soft, thin diameter, but pretty strong. Its not as strong as maxima, but if you feel the line diameters of the same lb test, the lines are two different animals (feel the line, don't go by whats printed on the spool; maxima is way thicker than they say).

Hook and hold!

I use maxima but due notice it gets brittle in very cold weather.

Ande green 20# main 20#leader
Its strong, and disappears in the water. I buy it in 2 lb spools and replace it if I feel it is worn. When I was first starting to fish I lost 16 steelhead in a row due to bad line. I learned my lesson when I was 12 not to use bad line. I also replace the leader after every fish.

During the summer I will use 12 main and 8 leader when conditions warrant.(few and far between)

Trilene XT main line (Maxima ultragreen second choice), Maxima chameleon leaders. Both high abrasion resistance/low visibility.
