Bob,

I am considering buying a digital camera but wanted to get more information on them. I was hoping you would be kind enough to give me a quick rundown on how they work, advantages/disadvantages, and the better brands out there. Thanks.

For what it is worth, I use the Kodak DC120 Zoom. It has the exact things I need.

This month's issue of Outdoor Photographer has an excellent article on digital photography and camera choices.

I bought a Sony Mavica83 and it a fantastic camera and is doing everything that I wanted and more. I take all kinds of pix. w/it and keep the gooduns' and delete the baduns'.

The drawback is that they are pretty expensive but real cheap to operate. I'm not a picture taker professional like Bob is(when he remembers the floppy) but it's well worth the investment.

Several of my fishing trips this year I took a bunch of pix. and then forward them to to clients over the e-mail system and they thought it was waaay cool. You can also copy the floppy to another floppy and give it to someone. Floppys are real cheap.

Also can take 20 seconds of video and email that also. I think Bob has some of that stuff somewhere in his pages.

I'm just learning but having a BBall doing it. fp

I went to cnet.com when I was shopping for my digital camera. They have all kinds of info there plus comparison pricing. I bought the Kodak DC280(#1 selling digital camera according to cnet) through buy.com($200.00 under list price and no sales tax). Has a USB port for quick downloads to my computer and takes great pictures out of the box. Do it....they're great!

Get a Mavica.. Definitely =) expensive camera, but as long as you have batteries and floppy disks, you can take as many pics as you want!

Not familiar with some of the newer models, but some suggestions ... 640 by 480 res is what I run and it works great for web use w/o the file sizes getting too big. If you're going to be mainly printing pix, I would go at least 1024 by 768 (or whatever it is thereabouts) or even higher ...

The sony's are great in respect to their durability ... mine gets damp and banged around almost every day. And the fact that you can store on floppy on the low to medium res models is really nice ... if you're going to go with a high res camer (2 megapixels or something) ... go with the USB connector so you can put software in a couple of machines and plug in any of them at any time.

I use a Fuji mx-1700. I can store around 80 pictures on its smart media card (which is find for publishing on my web site), before I either have to put an extra card in or do a download. Its great to be able to preview the pictures in the field to see if they are what I want.
