Don't waste your money on the Scotty. Get the ace or the mighty puller. It is the same money and won't pull a pot over the rail. You will be hating it when your reaching over it get your pots.

The Ace is great. Never had a problem with mine. Just got the "bullfrog hands free" on it this week so not sure about that yet. Check out the utube video on it as it would help when out by yourself. Just a bonus if you fish scotty downriggers since it uses the same base.

Ace all the way. They stand behind there product 100%. Strong enough to pull up three shrimp pots at a time. We use ours probably 30 to 50 days a year.

I bought the ace and used it the first day of shrimping. Then I went to Johns in Everett and purchased the bulldog attachment for the second day.
The instructions for using the bulldog are crap. The line slipped all the time and I had to hold the lever to get the pot up.
I called Ace in Nanamio to bitch and they told me the instructions for the bullog are crap and need to be changed. No Kidding.......
I installed 2 washers (spacers) to make the gap bigger, then installed 2 more for good luck, and removed the rubber "O" ring. The line for the pots now rides on the 4 washers and never slips. Shrimping is now completely "hands free". I love the Ace with the Bulldog.
I have a large round bucket/tub from a feed store (with drain holes drilled in the bottom) underneath the puller. The Bulldog pulls and coils the line completely hands free, it is really a sweet setup. Each pot has 400 feet of line. The bucket holds all 1600 feet of line, so when I 'm finished shrimping the line is already coiled and ready for storage. Just wash it down with fresh water when you get home.

Just be done with it and go with the Honda. Mines almost 20 years old and still running like a champ.
A buddy of mine's skiff sank one day while buoyed in a storm. Pulled it to shore. Drained the oil and refilled it and it too has been running like a champ ever since. That was about a decade ago.

Ace advertises that their pullers are slow. I think (don't quote me on this) that ace pulls about 100 feet in 1 minute. You can expect 400 ft in 4 - 5 minutes. My friend has a gas puller and he was about to go A.D.D. waiting for the pot to come up. He said that the Ace being completely hands free makes up for it though.
On some Canadian forum's I browsed the crazy Canucks had gotten ticked off at how slow the Ace puller's are and installed heavy duty motors with gear ratio's to get the pots up quicker. They even had details telling how they did it.

I just got a new-to-me boat and I'm working on getting some things setup. Ideally sooner rather than later, I'd like to get a pot puller. It seems like Ace and My-T line pullers are the ones I've seen around but does anyone have experience with the Scotty puller?
What is the story on the new boat? What did u end up with.

I am building a pot puller. The davit is the easy part. Costs are at $45.00 right now. I want to go electric, but I cannot find a suitable 12VDC geared motor. I looked at ATV winch motors but there to slow. Checked into electric wheelchair motors, but they are 24VDC. Scoured the Internet and called every electrical motor shop in the area to no avail.
Anybody got a lead on where to find a high torque 12 VDC geared motor like they use on the electric pot pullers?
I know they got to be out there. Somebody's making them for the retail guys.
Thanks.

I dunno. . .I like my Scotty puller. It works beautifully for me so far and is very compact. I'll probably always have it stashed on my boat. The trick of course will be how much longevity it gives. We don't have enough reps on it yet.
Let me know if you want to dink around with it, as my boat is always in the water and you're welcome to check it out.
Not bashing my Scotty,

Well our year old Ace Line hauler motor just crapped out. Had an older style one that was seven years old and still going strong. Bought the new style one last year because thought it was suppose to be quicker and sold the used one. Since the Ace died in a remote part of B.C. it got replaced with a Scotty puller since that is what the local tackle shop had. Seems to work well and be quicker then the Ace. Will see how long it lasts. We prawn year round in Canada so put lots of hours on our pullers.

Y'all gonna end up with a Honda one day so you may as well just be done with it or....................................................keep replacing them POS's every few years Between Ak, Ca and Hood Canal I know dozens of folks who have Honda's and never once have I heard of one crapping out.

Yes-It's a commercial 4 horse single gear gas engine. What you'd find in a machine shop. I've seen them so rusty you'd think a sneeze would make the disintegrate yet they always start on the first pull! Fast, fast, fast too. I can crank that sucker up from 400' without loosing a single shrimpie as they are all pinned in the far corner of the pot I got mine at McKay's in Brinnon. Honda Pot Puller Not the best pic but she's very happy on my buddie's Lund.....

Well had sounded like the motor had been straining lately. Shipped it back to Ace today. Will see what they have to say.

I just hate to have one more thing with a damn gas motor. Between a couple boats, several cars, motorcycle, lawn mower, ect.... I feel like I am doing some type of motor maintenance all the time.

I bought an Ace line hauler last year and really like it, though I am not a sport/commercial every day crabber/shrimper. I am your average sport crabber that will NOT have another gas motor around to cajole,tweak,fix,tune-up and feed petrol. If I were going to use it in a pseudo commercial fashion then I would re-think my position, until then I will stay put with the electrics.
