Just heard on the radio this morning about another FL case last year, brought by the same prosecutor Angela Corey, of aggravated assault against a woman who fired her pistol in a warning shot at her estranged husband, who she had a no-contact order against, which he violated and then threatened to kill her. She feared for her life, fired one shot and was prepared to shoot him, but he turned and ran. Jury deliberated 12 minutes before finding her guilty, and because she committed A. assault with a firearm, she got 20 years w/o parole. Talk about life not being fair . . .

And...what race is that woman, Steve?

She was chased, and retreated. She was threatened, and had been previously beaten. The man who was beating her testified that he had beat her, and every other woman he had been with.

She was cornered, and shot a warning shot into the air.

She was being attacked, she tried to retreat repeatedly, she shot a warning shot, no one was injured much less killed...and she got 20 years with no parole.

George Zimmerman prejudges Martin to be a "fuckin punk who always gets away with it", follows him, brings the confrontation to Martin in spite of being told to not do so by the 911 operator, and then shoots and kills him...and is a free man who will probably write a book called "Why I am such a big fuckin Pussy" and be a zillionaire.

If Zimmerman was black he'd be getting fitted for a set of orange jumpsuits right now, and if that woman was white she'd be getting the book deal.

20 years for a warning shot? Regardless of race or circumstance, that seems like a crazy sentence.

And that's why the law is applied differently...the whole point of the Stand Your Ground laws is that you do not have to retreat...unless, apparently, you are a black woman.

Remember the guy who confronted burglars in his yard, ran inside to get his gun, came out and while chasing the burglars out of his yard shot one in the back?

He wasn't even charged, thanks to the Stand Your Ground law.

'Course, he was an old white man and the burglars were black...but that, of course, had nothing to do with it, not in this enlightened age.

The OJ case, unfortunately, was an instance of trying to frame a guilty man and getting caught with your hand in the cookie jar. Everyone knows the deal with that one.

Off topic but it is too bad they don't apply that same sentencing structure to sex offenders. If a gun is a metaphor for a penis, "brandishing, shooting and killing" would be just as offensive. Forget rehab... just put them away for good.

Then what about the (white) man who went into his house, got his gun, and came back out and shot the fleeing burglar (black) in the back, and got the benefit of the Stand Your Ground law?

I know what they said in her case, and they are either wrong, or applying differently depending on whether or not you are black or white.

Those statistics are based on the conviction rate, and not on anything else...and that's the entire point.

There's no doubt that it's a poverty issue, not a race issue...but there is more to the fact that a higher percentage of black people are poor than just noting that "they're black".

Don't just look at relative percentage of blacks that commit crimes, or relative amount of crimes that are commited by blacks...look at the conviction rates between blacks and whites that are accused of the same or similar crimes.

The fact that blacks accused of the same crimes are more likely to be convicted is not a poverty or education problem...it's a race problem.

Vanessa Coleman, got 35 years, for these charges:

Coleman was indicted on 12 counts of felony murder growing out of the rape, robbery, kidnapping, and theft of Christian and Newsom, 1 count of premeditated murder (of Christian only), 1 count of especially aggravated robbery (of Newsom only), 4 counts of especially aggravated kidnapping, 20 counts of aggravated rape, and 2 counts of theft.


12 counts of murder, 20 counts of rape, plus the others, and got 35 years... makes alot of sense...

According to the testimony of the medical examiner, Channon's death came after hours of torture, having suffered injuries to her vagina, anus and mouth. She was raped with an unidentified object and beaten in the head. It was also reported that her body was scrubbed with bleach which was also poured down her throat, in an attempt by her attackers to remove DNA evidence, while Channon was still alive. She was then bound with curtains and strips of bedding, her face covered with a bin liner and her body stashed within five large bin bags, before being placed inside a residential waste disposal unit and covered with sheets. The medical examiner said there was evidence that Channon slowly suffocated to death.
