I am interested in buying some jigs and going fishing on either the Kalama or the Sol Duc but I don't know what seize or color I want to use. Please help me out and post a reply.

I use a 1/8 oz. jig and my most productive
color is white head, red body, and black tail.

I've been having success with 1/4 oz pink and white also, often when other colors haven't worked. Good luck.

Depends on water clarity. Black or Cerice or combo of, or light pinks and oranges in low clear water. Colored water go with hot pink, flame orange or white. Another good jig in really colored water is white with glow head and beads. Try these and you cant go wrong. Vedders all time favorite color is cerise, its a gooder!! On the Duc for this weekend I'd try a hot pink pro-series "John's Jig". Its a pink rabbit hair jig with a long tail.

1/4 ounce Marabou in pink/white worked pretty well on the Elochomen when the vis was good. Tipped them with a small Sand Shrimp tail also. Don't know that if that is a common way of doing things, but it worked well for me this year.

Good luck!

Peach, peach and white, 1/8 oz. head, but pretty much depends on the water. I make/sell my own jigs in alot of colors. Let me know if you would like to try them.

My favorites:

Pink head, white chenile body, white marabou tail - all around good water conditions. My favorite on the Skykomish

Pink head, pink marabou or rabbit - Colored water and/or nate fishing. For the nates I like to make the jig a little larger. The rabbit makes for a larger profile as well.

White head, red chenile body, black marabou tail (Cowlitz River nightmare) Works everywhere, not just the Cowlitz, in just about any water conditions. Try the combo with pink and peach chenile as well.

To fill out the jig box, some orange and peach colors mixed with white or black and I'm ready for just about any conditions.

Just about all of my steelhead jigs are light - 1/16th to 1/8th oz. I generally don't run greater than 8lb test, except when nate fishing. If you run heavier line, you likely need heavier jigs to get down, stay down, and dance. Line diameter can really affect the movement of the jig, especially in deeper, slower pools and runs, so go as light as conditions will allow.

1/8 oz. jig, white marabou, tipped with a small piece of sand shrimp. Smelly jelly sticky liquid doesn't hurt either, but don't get it on the feathers or they goo up.

Beau-Mac makes a pink head, orange bead, pink&white feather jig in two sizes that I have found to be my No.1 choice when the river is in shape. In low clear water or summer flow, red feather jigs are hard to beat.

Want to know a good color that not alot of people try (and actually I haven't seen this color at all in local sporting good shops in Tacoma)? For years I've used a green (actual green not chartreuse) bodied hot shot with a black bill. A few years back I decided to experiment and tie up a green/black jig. I've used it in almost every condition and have caught fish on it. At Sportco they have a chartreuse/black jig, but I'm talking Green as in Emerald. A deep almost borderline dark green. I also use pink, pink/purple, or purple. If water is clear, i use a small black jig. Hope this helps....

For summer runs in late summer the only color I use a black/cerise marabou jig. Small 1/16 oz. or less. For winter fish I go along with Pink/White combo.

I've had good luck on the Nightmare with middle section colors in different shades of red/orange/pink. Another jig that has produced for me is a pink or orange head, bright red/orange body, with a clerice tail (which works well in high and medium flows). This past fall an all brown jig was nailing the silvers below the barrier dam. I tie my own and field test them--many that don't produce are stripped and retied with a different color. I've fished 1/16 to 1/4 ounce heads and found Gammie hooks to be expensive but excellent. If it's snaggy or I don't know the drift I'll run a cheaper Eagle claw through it first. It certainly is a fun way to fish!
