I wonder what skills Boeing teaches Machinists? I really have no idea what they do. Is it easily transferrable to other businesses? Will there be a bunch of companies around Pugetropolis who will get a sudden influx of highly talented individuals if B leaves? Will there be something for them to do?
I worked in a job where I was pigeonholed to a few tasks after a few years of being there, and while I was good at my job, and fairly compensated, and very secure, I still felt personally insecure knowing that my skill-set was diminishing to my core work, and I would not be a viable employee anywhere else should my job go away (I worked at a comma factory). I was nervous about that and quit that job ASAP.
Do machinists consider the opportunities for them if B leaves?

I'm no machinist, but I know a few. My guess is the only training received @ Boeing is specifc to the parts they are responsible for designing and engineering. I would bet they are fully qualified machinists when they are hired or before they can become part of the union.

They are assemblers for the most part. The union covers everyone from painters, sealers, assemblers to actual machine running machinists. SPEEA is the engineers union.

If someone on the assembly line drills a hole and puts in a pop-rivet, can they be classified as a machinist? Not technically...but covered under the MU.

According Wiki, they are.
A machinist is a person who uses machine tools to make or modify parts, primarily metal parts, a process known as machining. This is accomplished by using machine tools to cut away excess material much as a woodcarver cuts away excess wood to produce his work. In addition to metal, the parts may be made of many other kinds of materials, such as plastic or wood products. The goal of these cutting operations is to produce a part that conforms to a set of specifications, or tolerances, usually in the form of engineering drawings commonly known as blueprints.

The naval shipyard is always looking for people. That is where I got pigeon holed. I was a "nuclear engineer".

Since absolutely non of you seemingly have ever been in a union with great benefits I don't expect you to fully understand why 67% of us made the decision to vote no. I'm not going to beat a dead horse on our case as I can tell your minds are made up. The media has done a wonderful job of painting the IAM as militant union members. Honestly I think this was all part of Boeing's plan. It was win, win for Boeing. They want to leave so why not propose a slap in the face contract that they know we would turn down. Then they can leave without the state of Washington being mad at them since they are mad at us.
Personally, I'm a homeowner, in the middle of a $20,000 kitchen remodel, with a son on the way, and bills, bills, bills. You bet your a$$ I could have used $10k however, I did what I personally felt was right. And no, I'm not looking for any Pitty. I'm not interested in what anyone thinks right now other than Boeing and the union.
Senator Baumgartner is pushing Governor Inslee to try and make WA a right to work state. not sure how feasible that is because wa has been pro union for a very long time.
We are truly the only work force who can build the 777x on time, every time, and without defects, right now. Sure, maybe SC will one day be able to build the capacity that we do but it will not happen overnight. big customers like Emirates who are looking to order 150 777x planes will want us to build them.
Could this be the end of an era? maybe...

steeliedrew.... You're right...no one on here knows anything about unions, benefits or any such related topics .... Only you, with your VAST work experience, are qualified to rule on these types of issues. You basically just voted to jeopardize your "corporate welfare plan" Nice job.... now live with YOUR decision and stop whining. J_F_C And BTW....Stam, I 100% agree with your post. However I wish you could learn how to express yourself...lol

The UAW told the auto workers on Detroit that they were the only ones who could build cars. The USW told the steelworkers no one else can make steel like them. And now the machinist union is telling you guys no one else can build the 777. Apparently you have to have failed history to work at Boeing.

stam and Chuck are speaking from experience and know what they're talking about.
Hank doesn't know a f'n thing about Boeing, the 787 and its batteries, the quality of work done at various Boeing plants................or anything to do with this thread, really.
So it's the typical thread................

Nobody on this board really cares. Well not everyone. Some of us are in unions. Some of us were furloughed. Some obviously don't work. I think Boeing machinists make more than Federal engineers and Boeing engineers make even more. Counting your huge Christmas bonus and OT. Wow I get a fukin 1% COLA. The right wingers want to ensure your CEO makes huge sums of money at your expense.
