You should be this upset over the WDFW mismanagment of north sound mixed stock Chum fisheries. The Skykomish has what 5% of the chum run it had twenty years ago because they let seiners detroy a run of fish that fed nutrients to the system.

You or our state will have no control over what the Tribal Fisheries EVER do, they dont care about people who play with their food. Why do the Tribes net native fish of depressed stocks? When they have killed the last fish they will sue and win because they have the best lawyers paid for with casino money and polititions they own like our last Governess. In 2008 tribes above Bonneville settled for 900 million.

problem is, is by the time they are hauled in, they are mostly dead, so it really doesnt matter what sex they are at that point...

legal or not right or wrong good bad or indifferent it is certainly one thing. wasteful. The Skokomish tribe doing these kinds of things cannot claim any moral high ground they cannot claim any type of stewardship or any form of respect for the resource. they are commercial users of the resource nothing more nothing less.. end of story.

I seriously doubt all that nutrients in one spot is going to do that much good, at that point it's more on the order of pollution.

this isnt anything new around these parts up here YB3/D/whatever, considering the Skok tribe, it very well could be to anger people, alot (not ALL) of them dont give 2 sh!ts about white people... some are very geniune and good people tho....

a couple years back, on the Puyallup (another river that has this go on, matter of fact, it was happening yesterday and the day before), there was a tribal netter low in the river, with a huge, and i mean HUGE hole in his net....when asked why he had that giant hole in his net, his response was "its my way of helping fish out"... i dont know if it infact helps anything due to gill netting, but atleast he has somewhat of a voice in his head telling him something...

the Green/Duwamish is another river that they strip eggs and chuck fish on, the Hoodsport Hatchery fishery is likely another one, but i believe they take the fish elsewhere then dispose of them...

while yes, they will contribute to nutrient dispersion in the landscape, and feed animals such as otters, bears, eagles, herons, hawks, sea gulls, and everything else that eats them, they could also turn them into fertilizer like Lily Miller does with the Alaskan Fish Fertilizer, or, turn it into Fish Meal, and feed it to the smolts that they plan to raise and release in coming seasons...

stripping eggs is the equivalent of killing fish just for a mount, or shooting a 8 point bull just to have its head on the wall... thats not what these animals are on this planet for, and once they get really bad population wise, and i mean real bad, worse than what it is now, it will be too late to do anything about it, it will cost too much, and sh!t will hit the proverbial fan in the eco system...

Well, you have not been looking very carefully in the field or reading the journals. Direct consumption of dead salmon and their by products is well documented and important.

Do a search. Direct consumption is perhaps the most important pathway for marine nutrients to get to fish. Either by consumption of flesh or eggs. Then fry as they become available. Followed by indirect pathways through invertebrates eating flesh. Followed by sorption onto substrate of organic material as it decays and dissolves. Choose your pathway. It all gets back to the fish.

Sure I've read all that and i'll believe it when I see it but I can not for the life of me understand how a seagull shiit will benefit anything.

seagulls and other birds eat the fish, fly up into the woods, and sh!t, and when they do, the nutrients from the fish (NPK in fertilizer speak Nitrogen, Potassium, Phosphorus) get dispersed into the soil and end up as nutrients for plants...

same thing with bears, raccoons, opossums, and any other animal that eats them, then sh!ts in the woods...

So clever, too bad the nutrients couldn't be spread out the length of the river rather than in just one area. Isn't there such a thing as too much NPK?

If you have actually read the literature, you would know that sorption of organic material by the epilithic organic layer on substrate is important. Seagull [Bleeeeep!] meets the delivery requirement. So does decay of tribal carcass overfishing overload. So yes, seagull [Bleeeeep!] can be beneficial. And direct consumption is also important. Break down of carcasses or any other organic material can enhance productivity.
