Anybody ever fish Pelican, Alaska in early August? I'm thinking of going there for silvers and halibut. Any information would be much appreciated?

I worked on a longliner out of Pelican during college, killer place. August is primetime for coho in the Icy Strait, and pretty much anywhere around there for that matter. Not sure what type of trip your taking, but there's plenty of charters out of Elfin Cove and Gustavus, which are nearby towns.

Very strange, I lived in Pelican in the late 70's, at that time there were a ton of fish there, we caught halibut to 200 pounds off the dock with handlines and if we had a boat to use we would catch them all up and down Lisianski inlet. I actually prefered Yelloweye rockfish for eating and they came big and plentiful. Salmon fishing was so simple I've had a hard time fishing here for them. There was a creek about 3-4 miles south of Pelican that had good fish runs. I like to think they still get fish like they used to. By the way what are you going up there for? Also Robbo, what years were you there? C

I was there during the spring black cod/halibut fishery in '91/'92, and '94. One fond memory is of being there for Rosies 153rd B-day (something like that) and seeing her dance on top of one of the tables in her place for all the fisherman. I really wish I could get that image out of my mind.

Guys, thanks for the info. I had planned to take my son to Sitka for his high school graduation present. He then told me that he would rather go caribou hunting. So I cancelled the fishing trip, and began to work on the hunting trip. He than waffled on that...something about brown bears sniffing around the tent at night bothered him! So we are regrouping and now looking into a fishing trip out of Pelican. Based on all your input , I'll book it. Sounds like it should be great!

Fish SITKA-- by all means! I was a long range charter boat skipper in Southeast for ten summers. Pelican is cool, and Rosies is a real work of art, but the fishing was ALWAYS better in Sitka. The concentrations of fish in Sitka Sound are much more dependable than Lisianski Inlet. If you need some info on reliable charter skippers there I can provide them. Tight Lines, Rooster

Sitka and Pelican both offer a different type of fishing experience, but I agree with Rooster that Sitka is a better place to fish. Most of the better fishing around Pelican is on the outside at places like Haktaheen and further up along Yakobi. Pelican offers a rather sedate setting and good fishing, while Sitka is hap'nin with activity and can have phenomenal fishing. If you decide on Pelican, just try and keep the kid out of Rosies.

FishinFool, You might consider a little farther south, specifically Prince of Wales Is. around the town of Craig, late July and early Aug. is prime time for bigger kings and the silvers are usually thick in early to mid Aug. halibut fishing is also excellent at this time, and I think the weather is generally a little better then Sitka, there are also a number of very good charter operations here, good fishing
