On my way to work yesterday I saw a couple of fellow Steelheaders heading out towards the Snoqualmie(or maybe the Sky?) pulling a Black Willie's Driftboat. Couldn't believe it, I was headed for a windowless office, and they were headed for a day on the river! Damn, I was jealoous! I'm draggin' my Willie's out tommorrow and was wondering if there are any early reports for the Snoqualmie?

Many thanks...

Kev

From what I've heard and seen the steelies may be a little later this year. Last year it was pretty decent right off the get go, but has been pretty slow the first few days anyhow! Maybe a few more weeks and some more rain will change things a bit. Good luck!

Aestrolab if you were fishing the Cedar river in King County you were fishing ILLEGLY. Check the fishing regs before you fish again in closed waters.

Aestrolab

"for those who ride the illusionary moral high ground, while I face the flesh I eat face to face (nate or hatchery)..."

You posted the above in the 'Wild Steelhead Catch and Release' thread in your advocation of C&K wild fisheries. Did you bonk and eat this illegally caught nate on the Cedar River? The Cedar River steelhead run is close to EXTINCTION, thanks to predation by a burgeoning marine mammal population in Puget Sound. Sea lions and harbor seals just gather at the Ballard Locks and moe 'em down as the fish funnel into the locks.

If you did, while at the same time advocating your own sense of environmental awareness, I think Bob should ban you from this board.

I agree. Totally, you are the type of person that is going to ruin fishing for the rest of us.

When I first read this thread I thought maybe folks were giving this aestrolab person a hard time for making a beginners mistake. Then I went back and read through the topic Preston started about the CNR rumors saw what aestrolab had to say in there.

Any points you made about bonking nates are now moot. You're nothing more than a poacher. Taking nates out of waters where it's legal is one thing but targeting them in a devastated fishery that's been closed for years is just chickens*#t. I bet it was real tough to take that nate off a spawning bed. You're in the same class as people who spotlight deer at night or pick elk off of protected reserves.

One good thing may have come from your little boast though. I bet a couple of us let the fishcops know it might be worthwhile to check in on the Cedar more than they have.

The steelhead numbers on the Cedar this year were at a record low. Only some 50 fish counted through the locks. Now only 49. Aestroflab is a true dork. Please feel free to send him hate mail at:

For anyone who really cares:

Send some email to enforcement-web@dfw.wa.gov

It won't take long for WDFW Officers to track down "aestrolab". I'm sure mra-services.com will cooperate, as most ISP's won't put up with criminal activities from their clients. Especially when the Feds come knocking on their door.

I have mistakenly quoted the Cedar River in my previous response, however I meant the Green River. I was down near Black Diamond at some state park...Wanapat or something.

Hey Kev.
Just got back from the east. The word is that they have been picking up a few at the falls. Not alot. It's still pretty high for willie, lots of water coming out yet.

E-mail me when your ready to go and lets hook up either together or a tandem run here or the Sky(which will be the best bet this early)

Tom said the sky will be getting double the run this year because they had extra stock two years ago.

See ya ron Bob

Hey Ron Bob!
Good to hear from you! I'll shoot you some mail so we can do a tandem. I'm keeping my eyes on the flows right now, they're coming down, but still a tad bit high.

Obsessed, the marine mammals weren't actually to blame. For decades the Ballard locks were a prime spot for tribal netting along both shores. The nets were so thick that you could see a boat with it's prop entangled in a net any time of the day. Once the runs became severely dimished the nets had ceased and the blame was placed on natural predators.

How many of you fish the Snohomish below the highway bridge? And has any one seen any Kings down there? Just wondering if the fish hang there for a day or two or do they shoot right through. Yes I know its closed for Kings, just wondering on about future for thier survival. thanks

It's funny how Aestrolab's post disapeared for catching a native steelhead and bonking it. Regs. on the Green River in "Additional Rules" say--Wild steelhead may be retained when open July 1-Feb. 28

I disagree, Indians and commercials throughout the Pacific northwest overfish waters. When fisheries managers finally have the sense to stop or reduce harvest, stocks can be rebuilt. In the Cedar, stocks cannot rebuild past a remnant population because of marine mammal predation. Puget Sound populations of marine mammals have been well studied for at least 20 years, and the populations of, in particular, the California sea lion have exploded.

The Greenies place the blame on us, because of the funnel like environment that the steelhead must go through to get into the locks. This is also true, but bottom line: tribal fishing ended years ago, steelhead did just fine passing through the locks for decades, and marine mammals are completely unregulated fishers that have grown orders of magnitude over the past decade.

Yes they are coming!!! Was down on the lower snohomish plunking and just got slammed twice all within about 1 hr. I got the hits about 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Unfortunately no fish landed but you know it's just as exciting seeing you rod bounce like hell when you are not paying any attention. Both strikes I must have been about 30 yards away! Oh, well it could have been worst. We also saw about 10 roll on the river, but that was on Tuesday when the water was way up. Anyway keep them coming, fish on!!!

Those fish rolling might be Kings. The Wallace hatchery already has some in there pen as of yesterday. Maybe if we get a bunch we might be able to fish for them. But I doubt it. It is nice to see them in the river so early anyway.
