The problem with Jet skis on rivers is that of conflicting uses that interfere to the extent that one or both uses are diminished. Just like separate hills for skiers and snowboarders at smaller ski resorts. The two methods take the hills in different manners and having them together could cause safety problems on small runs. Its a recreational aesthetics issue; its a safety issue. Its not sporties being selfish.
This isn't a problem on lakes and marine areas because there is sufficient room to segregate the uses, so everyone can have fun without interfering with each other. Drifties and sleds piss and moan at each other, but at least both uses are substanially the same--transport too or through fishing water. This would only become a problem on small rivers, like the current debate on the Nooch.
Right now we're at the complaining stage, because of a few incidents, but by in large, only a few jet skis are present on rivers. But do you honestly believe that if there were as many jet skis as there are drift boats on the Skykomish River in April, there wouldn't be an accident, sooner or later!? Plus add a few feather guys waded out to their waists. You bet there would be an accident because a river corridor, with its deep water, shallow water, narrow water, rocks, sweepers, and blind corners, can't accomodate both uses.
Geeeeeeeeez....
