In today's Seattle Times there is reference to the Mukleshoot's test fishery in Elliot Bay last night. Where might one look for results of that test fishery?

Fishguts,

You might try the Muckelshoot fisheries office at 253/931-0652.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.

Heard they got 161 fish, which was a record for this test fishery -fish were averaging 16.5 lbs. So based on these results it looks to be a very strong run this year. Expect a 72 hour sport fishery in Elliot Bay on the kings to be opened up two weeks from tomorrow.

It's ironic how this system works, if the sporties get more than their quota, then the natives must get in the fishery and equal the share. But if the tribes get more than they should in a test fishery the system must be shut down! RE. last year in Elliot Bay.

I have worked in the sporty industry for over ten years, I used to think ohh well "thats the way it goes" . But from now on, forget it!! The Boldt descision was a Joke(Hear me Lafontaine! That judgement was the biggest joke in history! I wish I knew then what I do know, I would have told you to " go to hell" you whining *******). Jeez, I have heard enough about the poor indians, throw the dice, guide a sporty, or plant a tree. In my estimation the average tribal member would make a lot more $$ guiding sporties in a non-netted coastal fishery than they make selling wild steelhead for a $1 a pound in the commercial industry.

Salmon tackler, Good morning I can agree with your thoughts that the tribal members would derive more income from guiding anglers rather than gillnetting.
What would you propse, possibly a moritorium on non treaty guiding, followed by a by-back of guiding bussiness (similar to what the state did for the commercial fleet).
Freeing up all those clients that the non treaty guides now take up and down the river would certainly go a long way toward getting this program up and running. Maybe we could allow the non treaty guides to keep half of there clients off reservation.

Fishlips;
Thanks for the reply. I hope we get a chance at them this season.
Did you find the info by calling the tribe as salmo g suggested or have you found another source?

Isn't it a little strange we have the tribes do "test fisheries" which results in killing an endangered species? I mean it's sort of like having some foxes check out the hen house.

Why don't we have test seasons on bald eagles, seals, whales, spotted owls and such? What is so special about FISH? We don't stund and release elk or goats; why catch and release FISH?

I happend to run into one of the tribal biologist yesterday and he gave me the scoop. He seemed to think it was a done deal so put August 4-6 on your calendar.
