I wonder if Country music is still the most listened to music now days?

I just remembered "Trace Atkins" he's pretty good.

I went to high school with Nathalie Maines (the lead "Chick.") She was always a heck of a singer. Her pedigree is nothing to sneeze at (in country circles anyway). Her daddy, Lloyd is a steel guitar legend of sorts and has worked with many of the "good" country acts mentioned in this thread.

Anyway, today's "country" music has given one of the most important genres of American music a bad name. True country music is still alive and well in places where commercialism can't corrupt it. There's lots of good stuff in Texas, and in some places you'd never suspect. Heck, here's a guy from Chicago singing about the Nashville scene. He's definitely a yankee, but his style is pretty true to tradition.

Robbie Fulks - F*** This Town

Here's another one that makes me tap my toes and chuckle:

I Told Her Lies

Heck, even Ween (one of my faves) gets in on the action sometimes:

Piss up a Rope

Anyway, it's not just about how old it is. Even though I'm sure many of you will think this stuff sucks, too, I can say that I think there are good examples of every genre; yes, even rap, out there.

Believe what you want. I'm just saying that when I saw Pink Floyd (well, the iteration at the time), the people around me sure didn't look or smell like they were Mitt Romney or John McCain type voters.

WGAF, you take things way too serious here. For the record I don't like Mitt and cant stand McCain. You're not as smart as you think you are.

Enter Hank 3, here, just to keep the thread alive.

Stuck on an Island,

The Cult
AC/DC
Anything with Chris Cornell
Rush... yeah that's right I said it.
Any Roy Orbison.

Don't care for Taylor Swift. I'll listen to some country, but last few years, not so much.

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

AC/DC, The Cult, and Cornell are all solid island choices.

Indeed, but if you consider the whole body of work, I think they're some of the most talented dudes around. They've tried just about every pop style there is, and IMO they've pulled it all off quite well. Lots of goofy songs (huffing ScotchGuard will do that over time), but lots of real gems as well.

Would be fun to fish with Mickey someday. Seems like a pretty down-to-Earth dude.

I like the blues - Chicago, Delta or Jump Blues which provided a big part of the foundation of rock & roll.

Since it's Billy Ward's birthday, here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpQuNY3XFI0

Another dude is blues shouter Big Joe Turner:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJsod7Lgn8E

Or Big Mamma Thorton singing a tune Elvis covered:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoHDrzw-RPg

I wonder where it would have gone if Elvis, Pat Boone & the other 'acceptable' singers hadn't been pushed forward in place of the real musicians creating a new musical genre'.

The Cult is definitely on my list of Island choices... I love how they reinvented their sound in so many of their albums.
