Are you asking about a truck? If so, stick with Ford.

Thanks Chuck. Wife and I are thinking about a live a board marine trawler. Found an expert in the business a couple days ago. Just wondering if anyone had any first hand experience.

In what your looking for is a displacement hull then your selection of engines is rather large. Yanmar, Cummins & Cat are the usual picks and as your not into the high RPM planing hull bit then it is about hours & maintenance RECORDS. If you jump to speed in a planing hull then it is CAT & Cummings 600 hp and below. Above that it is CAT or Mann.

Thing is you can in frame a Cummings or Yanmar for the same price that the parts will cost with CAT. I have always preferred CAT diesels primarily because I fished bill fish and those boats are made to run fast. Overseas I was amazed at the number of Yanmars in local fishing boats. They prefer endurance & economy over power & speed. My guess is you will end up with Cummins or CAT but you do see a lot of other makes around and for a displacement hull with low RPM propulsion many engines that are tried and proven are available.

Thanks for the response. I'm just dipping my toe in the water at this point. It's fun to kick fenders. Pulling the trigger on a vessel I can really dig is gonna take some time. I really don't have time for a project boat the size I'm considering.
Overall, speed won't be huge concern. Endurance and economy will be the most important. I'm still learning about the different moorage possibilities. We're leaning towards a marina like Everett. Looking at boats that the wife and I can live on locally, then take up to Alaska via the inside passage.

Living on a boat is not always that romantic like some people think. Especially in the winter...damp and cold and always dealing with mildew issues. A super yacht is a different story.

Divorce? Ain't gonna happen. She would be pissed if I was having too much fun without her. Besides, I need her to keep the mildew down and keep the head clean.

Dollar for dollar you can get a lot of creature comforts, economical operation, and quality workmanship from Ranger Tugs and Cutwater. I know they've both made a lot of trips up through the Inside Passage, but I can't atest for their offshore performance.

You get what you pay for, comes to mind. Those are solid rigs. I'm looking at boats about half that in price. Most of the trawlers in my price range are in rough shape. I found one that was rebuilt, re-plumbed, rewired, and new bottom paint. Sale pending by the time I called. Hard to work 60hrs a week and be able to jump on a good deal. If the right boat does come around, we'll be having a hell of garage sale. smile
