Here's a wierd coincidence, anyone have a similar experience or a explanation?
Thursday, July 13, 2000 at Jeff Head, good dawn bite, then the SE wind came up and our luck just shut down, spent the rest of the morning fishing near a charter (25' older glass boat with green stripe) trolling flashers with some sort of small artificial on a short leader who was killing em', both kings and silvers, we fished the same water at all depths, herring with dodgers and flashers and got skunked! Left frustrated.
Last Saturday, August 13, Skiff Point, good decent early bite on silvers, SE wind came up, and deja vu, same results fishing right next to same exact same charter boat!! Watched his party land at least lots of silvers and several kings while we got just a few short hits on herring!
Could it just have been the 13th jinx, or is there more to this?? Whoever that charter captain is, he does a great job a putting his party on the fish!

A lot of the old timmers say an East wind and the fish tend to hunker down and not bite very well. Ive noticed this in the 20 odd yrs fishing so there must be something to it.

There is a old saying I heard but don't remember it all. It goes like this:
"Wind from the west, fish bite the best; wind from the east, fish bite the least; wind from the south, will swing the bait in their mouth; somebody help me with the north part, I can't remember.

I baught a book by Jed Davis on spinner fishing and he talked about wind having a big part in "the bite" he makes it sound as important as water temp. I think it's clear that it has something to do with feading habits or something.
it is one of my fav books, every fisherman should read it.

Chip Sounds like you need to book a trip. He is obviously a good fishermen that you could learn a thing or two from. Money well spent if you learn the difference in what he does when your striking out. It might be as simple as the color of his lure. Wind from the East, fish bite the least. Wind from the West, fish bite best. Wind from the North, do not go forth. Wind from the South blows the hook to their mouth.

Chip, it might have been "fish finders". He uses "grand slam bucktails" with a dodger.

This wind stuff is pretty kooky. I think the only concidence is that guides hammer fish. Take Marty's advice and fish with this person. Ask him/her what modifications in gear and presentation to make when the wind kicks up. Another guide that trolls is Steve Hansen from Shilshole. Also try using lures instead of just herring. There are many other factors besides hunger that trigger a salmon strike. The aforementioned grandslam bucktail has been hot as well as the the new squid-patterned ProKing Spoon. Hint: Try switching over to a dodger, but run it tight to the ball, because the action (kick) is much better.
Peace Out...

Was the boat's name "ROLLIN'" by chance?? If so, that would be "Dr. T-Ho-Kee" and his wonder flies behind his specially twisted flashers.

My grandpa was a commercial salmon troller with a special bend in his flashers. He claimed it made a big difference. I am sure he was telling the truth since he was grandpa. Tight Lines ------------------ Marty Steelheader.net marty@steelheader.net
