Working from home?

Does anyone here work from home? Not you Skate. I might have the opportunity to do so. I'm a self starter, so I don't think that would be a problem. I've read that people that work at home tend to put in more hours. Would like to hear from people that have or do this. Thanks.

I work from home but I am also self employed. I have an office in the house and I do put in a lot of hours. However, as I am a real estate appraiser, when the market is hot you put in tons of hours. When the market is cold, you have some free time. Couple things to keep in mind when working from home: 1) Do you have a family? If so, they need to understand that just because you are home, you are still working 2) If you have a family, sometimes it would be nice to have an office somewhere else.

My schedule is a lot like DB's...my office and shop are both in my home. When the orders pile up, so do the hours...when they don't, I go fishing It's almost never consistent. All this week has been 12 to 15 hour days, but when the pile of store orders I have in front of me are done up in a couple of days I will have a few days off during the week next week. My lady works from home occasionally, and when she does it's just like a regular work day for her, she is in constant contact with people who are in the office, her phone and laptop are always on and running...she just doesn't have to commute either way that day. Fish on... Todd

I have an office that I share with Sally, but she works a few miles away 9-5 so having the office to myself wont be a problem. I sure wont miss that damn I-405 traffic. Hanging with the Dog doesn't sound all that bad...and he'll love it. I will miss the camaraderie, but the less stress of the commute will be huge. Thanks for the info guy's.

Although I traveled a great deal, I worked from a home office for the last 12 years of my working career. Now retired, I don't work at all... Wife works at home providing customer service via phone. She works for a company that handles the business for dozens of major companies, including Microsoft and Verizon. Doesn't pay much above minimum, but then there's no commute, no needing to get dressed up for an office environment, etc. Steelspanker's suggestions are right on target. Treat it like any regular job, but you just happen to be doing it in a home office. DO NOT get in the habit of web-surfing while working...you'll never get anything done.

Self employed home business here. Commute is easy. Can work as much or little any time I want related to need for money. Not really a problem but it's not like a 9-5 that you leave and forget for the day, weekend or vacation. Kind of a nagging feeling of getting more done all the time. A beer usually takes care of that problem though.

I have worked at home plenty and it sucks for me, because it means I didn't get my work done (or even worse one of my guys didn't) and I have to work late into the night. At my house I have little kids, so it is hard to get anything done at all until they are in bed.
I gave up on that and got a small office above another business a few minutes from home which helped immensely. I can get done in 1 hour there, what took 3 at home. Then, I bought the other business I shared the office with. Now I work from the office, the other office, from home, the river, the duck blind, and the car.
