drifting is the only way to go. float fishing is the cheaters way.
everybody knows the "bite is the drug" . float fishing is for retards.
a guy loses more gear on the bottom. a guy also learns more on the bottom.
there is no amount of free gimmes' on the internet..... NONE!
time on the water and learning the rules is the way to get fish. get on the water and just do it.
bobbers have their options, yes. bobbers are simply strike indicators. whether you pay $5.00 or $1.50 for the bobbers it simply does a simple chore.... relay the bite. yet you learn nothing as to the mystical bite. you can catch 500 steelhead and still be a retard.
the bite detection is the drug, everyone wants. no one has ever claimed how great the bite was from a bobber..... NEVER. imagine catching a 21# steelhead and not recalling the sensation of the bite. makes you think huh?
the spoon guys talk about the smashing bites come from a spoon. this is very true. getting rid of float makes a guy a better steelheader.
use the bobbers when the bottom is grabby.... after that get on bottom and feel the take... it's the very best and very personable.
they both have a time and a place. sometimes they both work in the same place. sometimes only one will work. sometimes the bite on a float is almost impossible to see.
examples of the above... once I stepped into a hatchery hole that was being fished by masses of floats because of a submerged tree halfway though the hole. me knowing the tree was not on bottom and that all the floats were set above it allowed me to swing a corkie under the crowd and hook and land a nice fish.
once I was fishing a float and it had stripes painted on it (kids sharpies....) halfway through the hole I saw it spin (thank you kids!) set the hook and got a fish...
in fishing sometimes you win sometimes you lose and sometimes it rains....

Well I'm here to tell you, that over the past 20 years....the change over from "drift fishing - to float fishing" has increased by "lot's".
The use of jigs has done lot's of that but the simple fact that a person that knows the fine points of float fishing will catch more fish over a period of time. I know many good fishermen, just like you, that think the "feel of the bite" is one of the best parts of catching a fish. I agree it is exciting to feel the "bite" but I'm here to tell you.....to fish a hole that has been beat to death....run your float thru and see that thing bury is still a thrill.
I'm a retard and a cheater, by YOUR definition, but there are 10's of thousands of others like me. Some just can't adapt to "modern" ways of fishing!!!!!
Wasn't long ago, people laughed at me for using, 13' rods......guess what, I' seeing more and more.......they work and help me to be a better fisherman. I still use short rods, well 10' ers and even 1 7'er for twitching.
I still like to hear/see "bobber down" !!!!!!!!

PS. I do believe the art of drift fishing is dying off. Not many true drift fisherman any more. Remember back in the day when 99% of all steelhead fisherman just drift fished? Rarely see that now. And no, I'm not calling ANY of the flossers crowd out there drift fisherman. Also not including anyone fishing out of a moving boat. That's not drift fishing either and should also be lumped in to the "retard" crowd.
thats because now, if you drift, you are labeled a snagger or flosser, 1 foot leader to 10, you still are.... smh...
i will never stop drifting, although i have gotten into twitching a bit, drifting is still my home.... there is NOTHING like feeling your line pull away as you are ticking the bottom... nothing at all....

don't take to much offense to that.
it just cracks me to so many bobber lobbers these days. It just seems like it's all that the newer guys start using these days and never advance past it.
bobbers are super great in the boulder gardens.
when the bottom is the typical rock, it's all about the lead!
Drift or Float..............just "FAG DRAG" then your doing both @ the same time.Blahahaha. I'll never stop drift fishing as the tug is the drug.Good luck,
I learned to drift fish from Grandfather in Potholes Canal. We used to catch very many very large rainbows there. I started when I could get through the barbwire.
I have enough corkies to fill a gunny sack, so drift I will!
Unless I am bobber doggin with Mike Z.

Ya'll just keep on....keepin on.. with your plastic training wheels and your pencil lead. I think I'll sleep in and do a little "house cleaning" later in the day
As great as the take is on swung metal, I love the grab on drift gear. Learned how to steelhead with drift gear, so it will always be my preference when it comes to steel.
I guess you need 4 rods. Drift, float, one handed for "nymphing" and a two hander for swinging. I've seen a couple guys during steelhead season carry in 7 rods...all four listed above plus a plunking rod, and a couple other spinning rods for spinners and another for spoons...there is such a thing as over prepared. Now if you have a good boat, you need the obligatory 10-15 rods because two or three get snapped trying to net a 6lb hatchery brat. :P
If the bite when drifting is everything why even have a hook? A fisherman floating a bobber has his rig in the water way more than someone driftfishing as they aren't retying all the time.
