you can call 360 902 2936 for some answers talked to a guy (forget his name)a trible officer has the right to detain you and call legal authority on shellfish violations some contamintion thing, but other than that has no authority what so ever, off there land when they pull there nets around you (even though the way its happining )you can not interfere it is a fedral offence to interfere with any treaty fishery, and yes it is illegal to fish inside there nets. thats what i was told

Well lets see if I can remember the questions.

1. Regarding conflict...it will only hurt us as the tribe wants it to be closed to us during these days...he lobbied to keep it open and it is!

2. It is legal to fish in front of (within reason) I would say until they arrive...and behind them is no problem...I am sure you can't fish in their nets...would you really want to??

Went down to hoodsport again today and it finally happened!!!!I was told by a buddy about 6:45 the Indians showed up to net.Two guys were standing on the south side of the bank with lines in the water and they were told by the indians to reel up.Well they didnt and they ran there lines over.As soon as the netters hit the beach the fight was on and fists flyin.Something needs to be done or guns will take a role in this whole thing.They wiped it out AGAIN.600 in the hatchery for the year so far and 4000 in 2 days for the indians.TM

TM, Did you stay long enough to see what they did with the fish?

TM....I will make a call today! This run was only projected at (if I remember correctly) 7000 fish...if that run size is correct and they have netted around 4000 then something needs to be done to ensure egg take!

Did the fist fights really happen?? That is not good news for our side...

I was told second hand about the fist fight.and havent been back since.Thats the kinda thing we dont need to happen if we are going to try to turn some of these things around.TM

i went to hoodsport sunday, there weren,tany fish to be seen nosing the hatchery creek. this was from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. very sad to see

Jim, have you been able to confirm the 4000 number? I'm interested because the girlfriend of one of the tribal fishers said that her boyfriend had reported to her that fishing has been slow so far. Thanks

I tried all day to confirm or deny...to no avail...nobody around. Hope they haven't left for the weekend! I will keep trying.

things are getting out of hand. I think that is crap that the indians have netted 4000. That is so many fish.

Well I am not happy with the answer that I got but here it is.

The hatchery manager at this point is not worried about achieving egg take quota so they see no need to curtail tribal netting. Nobody has tried to confirm the tribal harvest number. So gents here is my stand...this has become a state taxpayer funded tribal gillnet fishery...I ask...why raise the Kings at all, if that is what it is for or at least have the tribe pay for it.

Went down today and there was a ton of fish coming into the racks!!!(THANK GOD).They had a special meeting this week and the nets only get from 7:00am to 12:00 tues and thurs insted of tues and thurs 7 to 7...Lots of fish showing up today lets hope it keeps up......TM

Keep in mind that there are ALOT of fish there. They cannot spawn so they have to be taken one way or another. Sporties cannot take any way near the numbers needed to fully fish the run. Whatever is taken the Hoodsport hatchery personel are responsible to ensure that they are taking what they need.
I was told by Hoodsport hatchery personel that if tribal members don't take the run then the fish are sold to the commercials. This sounds like state sponsored commerial bussiness but may in fact be necessary to keep the hatchery operating, I don't know. I'm also not sure what the financial aggreement with tribal members is.

BTW: If any kind of cop tells you that you are in volation of a Felony ask for a badge number, the RCW number, get out of the way and go look it up. If the cop is wrong then you have some hard information to turn over to authorites.
