With a little ingenuity and hard work, it's not too terribly difficult in the pnw to be self sufficient. Grow a garden, hunt, fish, and gather berries and shrooms. One step farther, cut your own wood for heating.

That's the way to do it. Cuts down on mowing too. We currently have 26 chickens with another 24 pullets arriving the first week of April. I can't eat store bought eggs anymore. Organic, free range happy chicken pets that provide a constant source of protein and laughs. We'll be expanding our raised beds soon and adding another greenhouse. There's a lot of satisfaction in doing it yourself not to mention the benefits. I made manicotti with this years elk sausage.

We also drink only raw milk in our house. Since switching a few years back our sons allergies went away immediately and haven't returned.

Real eggs are the only tasty ones, too, besides being much better for you.

I can't think of a bigger waste of time and resources, not to mention source of fish killing pollution, than maintaining a lawn of any sort. Most of ours is gone, and I can't wait to be rid of it all soon.

I hear you on lawns. I don't use any chemicals or artificial fertilizer. The chickens are a good source as is our compost bin. We have the smallest trash can that Waste management has and I pride myself that it never has much in it. We have to be on a weekly pick up but could get by with monthly.

I've been installing drip irrigation to the fruit trees the last few days. I like the precision and efficiency of a good irrigation system.

Gotta go skin a beautifully furred coyote that got too close...

PS...do you have chickens?

My best bud has about 3 acres on the Clack, he's constantly mowing that SOB....no thanks. It takes him about 3 hours give or take. There are some nice holding water areas. thumbs wink

If you had kids you might think differently about it.

But I agree with the premise of not wanting or needing a lawn. When I break down and buy a house, a big or any lawn won't be the something that makes me buy it.

Some might say the happiest day of a mans life is the day their child is born... My happiest day was when he was big enough to run the mower! smile I don't do grass, but I have a hell of a nice crop of weeds and moss... and it stays green all summer long without a drop of water or fertilizer

Typical earth first types here.

Making raised beds with treated lumber and using poly pipe for their irrigation.

Carry on.

I don't even have a lawn, at the Trump tower it's all concrete. I prefer my grass on a golf course.

In the true spirit of making my place a wasteland I used my TRUMP card.........

Killed a cedar.....

Fabbed up a chainsaw mill filling the air with smoke.......
Robbed the beetles, Squirrels, birds and all other insects of their habitat........

Nailed it up..... Needed new steps and wanted to cover so as to not see under my porch so I used what was on my property to get it done and in the process was able to make several negative impacts on the earth.....

Would it have been faster to go buy the cedar? sure..... But this sure was a helluva lot funner ruining the Enviroment myself!!!

Milling timber where it's going to be used is a hell of a lot more environmentally friendly then trucking it hither and fro from the forest to the mill to the warehouse to the store to the porch.

I hope you cleaned up after yourself by burning all the limbs and unused parts.... Preferably by starting the fire with a nice mixture of diesel and used motorcycle oil!

I had a similar project last year. Fell cedar, used wedges to split off lumber. Gave half the tree to a buddy for fence posts and I took the rest to use for planking over a ditch. I was amazed how well cedar splits if it doesn't have knots. Yours would have been tough with mall and wedge.

That all you got, Frank? A critique of fashion of sorts tells me this debate wasn't as entertaining as your rethuglican debates?

I've got it recorded, not a big fan of any of them....well see
