Thought I'd check and see if any fellow fishermen might have a vehicle for sale. I',m looking for my 16yo's first car, have a 3k budget. We can work on it if it might be a good ride with a blown engine, or need other parts/labor.
Thanks,

I have just what he needs, a nice 1987 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4 4sp manual.
Cheap. Great mileage and safe (he can't afford to drive it very far)
More like what most here learned to drive when young. I don't think anybody learns to drive a stick now.

Don't do it Sky-Guy.
The 16 year old in our household totaled the family truck TWO DAYS after getting his license.
I am now 100% convinced that no one under the age of 18 should be allowed to drive.

When our kids were getting their licenses our insurance agent told us to plan to have whatever car they were driving totaled the first year. They didn't do that, but it does sound like good advice.

Thanks for decreasing my anxiety levels! It's a she, and we are looking at old Subaru's, light trucks, all automatics(thanks but no thanks Jody). I have been considering crash test ratings.....

The 17 year old pulled out in to the street and got T-boned. Totaled her father's car. At least she made it a year.
Does that help?
Let me just say this again - EVERYONE from the ages of 16-18 are BAD drivers <PERIOD>
They ALL will use their cellphone while driving, which according to studies now, is far worse than driving while under the influence. Ok, I might have made that up, but it sounds convincing.

Yeah, not really. It's surprising how saturated the used car market is, and equally surprising how much people want for a 12-20 year old car.

Get a Miata. It has no backseats. Only rookies "need" a back seat ;-) Fish on... Todd P.S. They are convenient, though.

My two boys shared an old ford truck, they didn't like it much, but did do some damage to it. When my daughter started to drive she wouldn't drive the beat up truck so we got her a Subaru, she drove it for several years.
My younger son graduated from college, came home, and in the first week totaled my new ford pick up while looking for a job.

Both our kids (son and daughter) wanted Ford Rangers. We still have the daughter's. Bought used, but spendy as they flew off the lot back then. Sounds like we were lucky.
The daughter's was a 4-speed; she was pretty proud of learning to drive that.

My dad gave me a 93 Ford Bronco for my first vehicle. Such an awesome fishing rig, I took that thing all over the place and it never let me down. I also smashed it into my mom's brand new SUV when I was 17. Happened in the driveway of all places. Bronco was fine, new car needed the entire passenger side replaced.
I like the advice regarding the expectation that your kid will likely [Bleeeeep!] up whatever vehicle you get them. Kids do really dumb things. Whatever vehicle it is, it should be well built and relatively safe.

The 16 year old saved up his money and bought a 1995 3-series BMW. POS hasn't run in months. What dumb ass buys a 1995 3-series BMW? Oh wait, a dumb ass 16 year old. PS: I also smashed it into my mom's brand new SUV when I was 17. I rest my case!

The best answer would be to get her a husband.
Typically they provide the women with a vehicle and usually drive.

The best answer would be to get her a husband.
Typically they provide the women with a vehicle and usually drive. Good Idea. When I was 18 I gave my girlfriend an old beater Honda because I bought a better car. ::BRAG:: I got lots of sexy times in return. ::BEAT:: However, I ended up getting married. Then, 18 years later. ::BRAG:: she buys me a brand new Jeep ::BEAT:: But, I have to give out lots of sexy times in return. If I could make two suggestions to you Sky-Guy: #1) Don't get her a car at all. Women are the worst drivers ever. My wife totaled two cars before I gave her that one. Let that dirtbag your daughter is dating buy her one. Now if you are not going to listen to my first suggestion, then you should heed the second: #2) Get a two seater car with no backseat. This is to spite that dirtbag she is dating. Trust me, I know a lot about being a dirtbag, 16 year old girls and the backseats of cars, gnomesayin?

Solid Advice. Anyone have a well built two seater in crates?

Steer clear of motorcycles as the act of riding one may give them positional practice.

When I was in high school in the late 70's, my mom had a '67 Impala....the back seat was bigger than our couch. But my girlfriend had a Celica hatchback....we spent a lot of time at drive-in theaters....don't recall watching any movies though.

Just helped our daughter get a VW Jetta a few years old but twice what you are looking to spend. Didn't want her walking to work or wherever in Seattle anymore in the dark and she has proven herself to be responsible since totalling her last car. Couldn't be more proud of her being clean and sober for 9 months.

When I was 16 I had a couple of buddies that had apartments with a bed and a couch. No back seat needed.
Whoa, whoa there fella. Did you ask your "buddies" if it was ok to talk about your same sex orgies on the Internets like that? Lol.
