going to be buying a four stroke for trolling would like some input on brands and what has worked best for you. it will be going on a 16ft center consel weighing about 1000lb and possable bigger later in life maybe 23ft to 25 ft question #2 has any one experianced over heating due to low idle (water flow) with standard prop and does it need to be changed out ?

I have a Yamaha 9.9 High thrust, bought it new in 1995 and only changed the plugs once, just because it seamed like I should do some thing? never skips a beat, Kinda like "Eveready" it just keeps going and going. You'll love the four stroke, which ever way you go, no more cloud of blue SMOKE. Good luck, Fish.

I got a Yamaha 9.9 HT...Never misses. The Yamaha and the merc are the same exact motor so dont worry about the wich is better, just buy for the options and or brand you desire. Buy the electric start its awesome. Im pretty sure they all charge. But if not thats an exellent option. I can fish with all 3 scottys and the electronics on and my batteries are always fully charged.

Merc and Mariner are the same, The Yamaha is different. All good motors. I have the Merc 9.9 and it pushes a 21 ft Northwest Jet just fine. Honda was sorta overpriced when I looked at them, but still a good motor.

HONDA 8hp is a great runner. It pushes my 20 boat great. One pull every time. Very quiet.-----Good luck! Mercurys are good too I have owned a few. I was told that the Honda lower unit on the outboards are a Merc. They look the same.------Fish on.

I've put hundreds of hours on both the Yamaha and Merc 9.9s over the past 10 years and think they are both great motors. I personally would buy the Yamaha first over the Merc. for a couple of reasons, one, fewer mechanical problems, second, the Yamaha is lighter, dry weight on the Yamaha is about 95lbs. the Merc.(big foot) is about 130lbs. Just something to consider if you're going to be raising and lowering the kicker numerous times during the day. Good Fishing

David and B-run. The Mercs and the Mariners are built on the same line (2 Strokes only). The 4 Strokes however are not built on the same line. They are built by somone else. Or they used to be(as of 97). My 9.9 Yamaha is a 97 and the Mercs Are exactly the same! The TR1 on my Yamaha fits the Merc also. Same carb. same mounting plate ect. Check into it or lift the lids on both. I think you'll be suprised. Its cheaper for those companys to contract out the motors rather than tooling them up. Unless recently the manufactures have tooled there own. Sales are skyrocketing so its probably justifyable. Let us know if you find anything out. Easy on my spelling...

I had the 8 hp Suzuki. Tough starter, stinky beyond imagination, and not real reliable. I bought it brand new in 95. Would never consider another one, fyi.

Hi, I have had two 9.9 Yamaha High Thrust motors and loved them both, although the current one is a 2000 model and runs more smoothly than my former '88 model. What I like is the high thrust ability to push your rig in a strong current and to troll at slow speeds w/o a bucket. My current boat is 21' and heavy and is just right. I understand Yamaha has a new 8 hp 4 stroke high thrust with a hydrolic lift included in the package. Such would be nice! I was lifting my former motor once and the latch loosened and I socked myself good once.
good luck
