This year is going to be my first year really giving winter steelhead fishing a try. I was wondering what type of hardware do you throw at them or any pointers for fishing for winter steelhead. any input is appreciated thanks.

Pick out the river you’re going to target as your home stream then find a guide who fishes it a lot. Hire the guide, tell him how you want to fish, bank, drift boat, sled etc, and learn from him. One day's fishing with a good guide will significantly cut your learning curve. It's money well spent. Make sure you get recommendations on the guide from other fishers as there are good ones and bad ones and make sure you indicate to him you want to learn not just be taken for a boat ride. Good luck.

Banki - If you're interested in fishing hardware (spinners/spoons) for winter runs, I would stick to anything that's large and silver plated. Vibrax spinners come in silver plate. Mortac (mail order) also has a good selection of silver plated blades and bodies if you're into building your own spinners. Use the #4.5's or #5's for winter runs. You could go up to #6 if the water is deep or off color. A 3/5oz or 3/4 oz. silver plated spoon is a good choice. Work either spinners or spoons along the bottom slowwwwwwly. But the most important factor is reading the water, which only comes with on-the-water experience. But that's the fun part......

Bill Herzog's books on Spoon fishing and Drift fishing both have a lifetime's supply of information for around $16. Can't beat it. Good luck.

I would give jigs a try, it's probably the fastest way to get into a winter run. Stick with pink/white in 1/4 oz and you'll get some fish.

Jigs or spoons will provide you with some hookups this winter, provided you are fishing them correctly. The key to spoon fishing is to work it slowly, almost like drift fishing, then let it complete its swing and reel in slowly all the way back to your rod tip. You will be suprised how many fish will take the spoon just as your getting ready to lift it out of the water for another cast. Good Luck1
