Shawn,
You say you live on a river and are looking for some transportation. Why would you consider an ATV rather than, say, a boat? It seems to me that a car or truck is most appropriate for getting up and down the roads near a river, and nothing beats a boat for getting around on the water.
I responded partly about making a point. Anglers make choices all the time. We all seem to want more fish and especially wild fish. Wild fish, of course, are produced by habitat. And the greater the quantity - and quality - of habitat, the more fish that habitat produces, all other things being equal. My point about choices is that I wonder if anglers generally think about the effect of their choices on their intended quarry.
I'm not saying this is your intent, but if you intend to use an ATV to drive across the river, through side channels and sloughs or wetlands to get to your fishing place, then this is about making a choice to risk adversely affecting the habitat that produces the very fish I assume you wish to catch. In which case this could be productive food for thought.
It was Lester's post about the mud/bog ATV races that caught my attention. I understand these are popular activities among some folks, but I wonder if those same folks understand what the unintended conseqences of their actions are. That is, tearing up the bog for kicks on the ATV on one weekend and then complaining about the lack of fish the next is the sort of thing that should earn a dunce cap, if you see what I mean.
Again, if I've missed the mark, just delete and move on. But I can't help but wonder what purpose an ATV serves in river fishing.
Sincerely,
Salmo g.
