This past year's return of chum was great to see. I retired two reels, so many fish returning to the South Sound. Are we going to see humpies returning in numbers like this? I certainly hope so.

Make that a huge , resoundingly large return if you please!

We’re planing a huge ( 7 kids plus 5 adults that have yet to grow up) south sound for - fun derby with a group of young folks (aka : kids) . They /we will all learn a set of basic fly fishing skills along with some basic Pink Salmon biology & history, along with some proper fish handling & C&R skills as needed.

Right now, we’re scientifically picking the daze & dates as well as the general derby location. Likely Redondo if they , ( the beurocrats) actually put both boat launch docks in for use this summer...

So, ya, the runs gonna be epic.

I hope so, love those mornings on the salt when you can see the schools miling around then chasing a jig in hooking and losing multiple fish in one cast!

Not unless the fishing on the feeding grounds and migratory routs is cut way back or stopped..

Remind me, no Derby invites to Rich this summer.

The end-around is the law and Congress. It remains to be seen who will actually enforce the law and if Congress will act or grab their collective ankles.

It will be interesting to see what the coho and pink forecasts are this year. They should be out around the 1st of March.
If the pink forecast is big enough, maybe they’ll have a 2 + 2 harvest limit again to give people more opportunity which they’ve done in the past.

2+2, Now that’s what we’re talk’n !

Gotta love the optimism. As the kids will be using their own (mostly ) money to gear up with the fly stuff, we’ll be waiting for the March announcement for sure. I talked this Pink returning stuff with the KC bio for our local creek here yesterday, and he was pulling for another 2+2 !

So, this week’s Pink Salmon’s pre season reading for the kids will be -

Tie Flying, er, I mean tying flys for Pink Salmon Fishing, with lotsa pictures.

I guess my point would be if you can keep two coho on a forecast of 750k, why not allow for two pinks (or four total) if the forecast is good.
There was a forecast of 4 million in 2023. You’d think that would be enough to allow a 2 + 2 limit.
My neighbor is going to buy a new boat and get this kids out for some pinks. I’ve got an invite to help them. I’ve found a lot of buzz bombs and rotators over the years on the beaches so well put them to good use with him and his kids.

Mini JIgs and small tail spinning jigs like the Jackal in various shades of Pink, clearly outfish the little buzz bombs, and lhey allow the use of smaller liter spinning rods the kids can use. Awesome Fun.
