If you don't want grime collecting on your rod guides, just dip the rod into the river and upon bringing it out briskly slap the lower end of the rod a couple times to shake water off. You can do this a time or two on slow reel ins too, and especially just before you cast. - RT

I picked this up from Paul Beaupre a few years ago on the tolt, Take a 1/2" x 1" sponge and use rubber bands to attach it tightly behind your second eye back fom the tip' then fill up a small empty scent bottle with anti-freeze. Then every 10-15 min add a drop or two. I haven't had ice in my guides since! Give it a try,you will be in the water fishing 2 to 1 over your buddy!

Try using a Q-tip to coat the inside of your guides with a thin layer of Vaseline. This has worked well for me.

Ice on guides happens, that's why I wear finger-less gloves. The anti-freeze idea sounds illegal?????

I use FDA poly propylene glycol, food grade.

If you don't have access to this they make enviro-sound anti freeze; available everywhere (same stuff essentially).

illegal? I seriously doubt a tsp. of this over the course of a day of fishing is worse than all the sulfites and and assorted other stuff available to smear on our presentations. (bite enhancers?)

I use Reel Magic spray on the line and the guides and it helps. When ice on the guides gets to be a real pain and I can't get a quick fix, then I grab the spinning rod as it has larger guides and the spinning reel won't birds nest when it freezes.
