Howdy guys. I have been fishing all my life but am brand new to fly fishing. Any advice on where to go for some decent trout fishing would be greatly appreciated. I have heard that Pass lake is a good bet. I live in Kenmore but don't mind driving a ways.

If you want to try some fly fishing in a quality river, then make the drive to Ellensburg. The Yakima River is considered to be a blue ribbon, fly fishing only fishery. You should contact the guys at the evening hatch guide service/ fly shop for information on current river conditions. They offer guided trips that I have not had the opportunity to take yet, but I plan to soon.

Anyone else got any ideas?

It all depends on where you are as a caster, and if you have a rod big enough. But I would hit the Sky, Snoqualmie, the Stilly and the like looking for steelhead and salmon.

I would expect that you should be able to cast 50-70 feet, and have a #7 rod or above.

If you can't cast that yet, then I would either stick to trolling lakes, until your casting can get you into 40-50 feet, then go river fishing. And if your rod is a #6 or below, then maybe you should stick to trout, at least until you are more experienced.

Easy,

Another spot on WI is lone Lake that offers great Chronie fishing in the winter... another spot worth looking at is Rocky Ford.

With the number of humpies in this year, I think that would be a great way to get started. Watched guys learning to fly fish yesterday, 15 to 20 foot casts and they were catching fish. Great practice, learn what the gear will do even if the fish probably aren't worth keeping. Most salmon I have ever seen outside Alaska.

FYI- The Yakima is not fly fishing only, it is managed under selective gear rules.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have heard great things about the Yakima. I got my first taste of fly fishing in August while visiting a friend in Idaho Falls. He took me for a drift on the Snake. Unbelievable fishery. I ended up buying a 5 weight 91/2 foot St. Croix and a cheap Okuma. Can't wait to get out again, but have been spending most of my time lately dragging flashers and hoochies in the salt. Thanks again.

Easy - The yak is a great place to head for lots of trout action. The river is at very low levels right now so if your are wading , you will have more access now than almost any other time of the year. The Evening hatch guide service is located at the head of the Canyon highway in a little hut in the old Husky Truck Stop. They will give you some ideas on where to wade , flies to use and if you want take you on a great guided trip.

Stalker - take that trip - You should have a great time and learn a lot about the Yak. I'm itchin to get over there soon myself.

There is alway the Middle Fork of the Snoqualmie to try. Size 14 Elk Hair Caddis and Royal Wuffs and size 18-14 Prince Nymphs and Hare's Ears do the trick.

Easy,

If you enjoy lake fishing for trout, the central WA quality lakes turn on again about this time of year. Lenice, Nunnally, and Dry Falls can be very rewarding.

Sincerely,

Salmo g.
