P.S. On the spring hunt last year...my dad kept going out, and kept trying...and on the last day of the season during a raging wind and rainstorm, had a few birds come in...he shot his first tom, and 20 minutes later called the same flock right back in and shot another one.

Looks like a fun trip. Maybe I’ll get around to trying it one day. Similar to Nick, I have a Winny 16 that used to belong to my great grandpa that would love to get some action.

Next spring I have got an invite to chase turkeys down in Goldendale. Will do some practice patterning my three shotguns (Win M-12 (from 1916), a Rem Auto based on Browning) and my side by side. I'll use what patterns best, as instructed by my mentor. While I spent decades working with and for turkeys, I've never hunted them. While chasing deer, they often walked within bow range so who knows. It will be fun just to be out.

With the advent of steel shot requirements for waterfowl, a lot of old guns are kind of out of commission now...Nick's Model 12 is a beautiful old gun, and there won't be any steel going down that original barrel. Thankfully with turkey and deer hunting it came out of retirement 8 years ago and is out there killing schit on the regular. I have a 1966 Sears & Roebuck branded Winchester Model 1200 that is also a generic shoot'em all gun...it has killed deers and turkeys, and that one has put some steel thru it and shot ducks and geese, plus all kinds of upland stuff. As nice and specific a lot of newer shotguns can be, it's hard to beat a 12 gauge pump from 50 or 60 or 80 years ago...but fuckodeer, they are heavy, and they didn't worry too much about saving your sorry shoulder from recoil back then lol. Whatever combination of shell, shot, and gun you use...if you can put 10 pellets in about 6" x 6" square at 30 yards, you are in the game. I hope it's the Model 12  Fish on... Todd

I'm sure you already know this but, Stick to the west side of the freeway, gated but walk in welcome, east of highway is leased and closed for private hunting clubs. Good luck and enjoy your hunt, love that area.

Fish on... Todd Yeah that’s what I’ve hear a lot of people say. I don’t plan on using it for waterfowl... but I have a newer 12 gauge for that. The old winny 16 seems like a solid gun for the forest chickens (grouse) and maybe turkey. I just haven’t tried either yet. The whole hunting thing is fairly new to me.

The place I hunt in Goldendale is a private ranch with limited hunting allowed. I would, if given the choice (accuracy) will be the M-12, originally my grandads and made in 1916.

40 days out from the spring turkey opener...using that to overlook the shitballs steelhead season we get this year.
I've got some fishing on tap, too, but really just looking forward to being back in the woods...plus we'll do some walleye fishing while we're there.
