Vancouver needs to host an F1 Grand Prix. The race in Montreal is one of the best, but a race through the streets of Vancouver would be incredible.

I guess Formula E is better than a sharp stick in the eye, but I prefer cars that make noise.

Are there muffler or noise standards for F1? Or is a muffler considered just extra weight and not necessary?

Can they clothespin bubble gum cards into the spokes to liven things up a bit..?

I know a guy that has some.

But of course they’re noise restricted, It’s an FIA /Euro requirement.

Although the current batch of F1 cars sound a bit better than they did a couple three years ago, that big bad Merc Safety Car still makes way better race car noise when it leads the pack under the yellows !

Go RedBull!

They sound kinda like sewing machines now. Sewing machines that will do 0-100-0 in less than 5 seconds, but still.

Back when they had V-10's and V-12's was the time when they'd make you think your ears were going to bleed. I was in the grandstand that sits on the hill climb out of Eau Rouge at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, and a couple times, I felt the side of my head to see if my eardums had actually burst and if blood was leaking out.

They were 3.5 litre normally aspirated cars back then. Now, they're 1.6 litre V-6 turbo hybrids, and they go faster than anything ever made before them - even the Williams FW15C car of the 90's with semi-automatic gearboxes, active suspension and anti-lock brakes. Ridiculous fast, sound pretty lame.

If you want noise and cars, check out top fuel. Nothing crushes you with the noise of horsepower like top-fuel drag racing - except maybe the space shuttle or Saturn rockets.

It was a load of fun! If you're an F1 fan, I would definitely recommend it - I think you could do the trip for about 3 grand.

Really? I had no idea. That's barely a six-pack of cylinder displacement. For how many bhp?

1.6L and faster than ever... The day they put that engine in a commercial vehicle, I want one! (Not ashamed to drive a sewing machine; especially a fast one.) Imagine the performance and gas mileage....

Of course, we're talking Formula 1, so those engines probably cost $500,000 each....

My old 1987 911 might've made some good exhaust noise when flooring it, but here's a fun fact. From inside with the windows up, it was sewing machine all the way.

The internal combustion portion puts out around 650-700 hp, but when you press the little electric boost button, you get an additional 160 hp. They go incredibly fast, they just don't sound like it.

Funny how that works, the “load noise to sewing machine fine ness noise” speed phenomenon. Usually it happened when the hi performance vehicle/motorbike really gets on the cam, the speed takes over , and time changes.

I gotta admit, I’m addicted to the noise , as I be leaned more towards the motorcycles side of fast road machines, and they can be loud indeed. Manx Norton 500 cc works racer comes to mind as does the Honda four stroke RC 211 V-5 Moto GP bike.

Got deep into the supercharged 5.8 liter today.

It pushes the blood right out of the extremities.

Great day for putting the HP to the ground.

If a Caddy on cinder blocks fails to start, does it make a noise?

Never would have imagined that car racing has evolved into very souped up sewing machines. They don't even sound like race cars, that is, not like race cars as I remember them. Thanks for sharing that. Guess I should get out more.

I am sure that a significant part of my hearing loss is due to going to SIR/PR and standing at the fence when the top fuel cars ran...would probably knock the teeth right out of my head if I did that now.

Fish on...

If I wanted to go the fastest, accelerate quickly, and do it in a real noise making F1 car, (assuming I could actually start and drive it ), I’ll go with the 2004 or 2005 Ferrari. All things considered, I think the real quick lap times of today really are about the contact patch, tire technology, and a bigger / wider stance.

What does impress , is that the current crop of F1 cars actually start the race with a full fuel cell /tank, and they never pit to re fill or top off for more fuel. So they start the race with nearly 300 lbs of fuel, and burn it down to to the finish. That’s gotta be tuff to set the car up to be fast with the huge difference in fuel weight over the span of a race...

That, and F1 racing still has best qualifying process in all of racing. Almost as fun to watch as the race itself.

If the Tour de France was run in F1 cars it would suddenly become much cooler.
