The football pool gods smiled on me and dropped some cash (go Huskies). I want to buy a spinning outfit for freedrifting, and bobber fishing.
I was looking at a g-loomis 1082s, but there are so many Shimano's out, which one have you guys had good luck with? Thanks for the help!

I have a 1082c and would say its to light for winter runs. I also have a 1084c it can handle larger fish. It works OK for float fishing but somtimes I wish I had somthing a little longer. Id have to say its the best drift rod I ever owned. If I was going to get an all purpose rod Id go with the 1143 or maybe even somthing a little longer. I havent used one but have heard good things.

TH custom rods built me a 1143 in a spinning config. Its the nicest spin rod Ive ever used. I have a semetre and a stradic that I switch around depending on the line I want to use. My 1083s isnt bad either but I cant put my 1143 down.

I have a 1082 and think that it is an awesome rod, great touch and feel. I do use it mostly for boondoggin' from a boat, for bank fishing it might be a tad soft for the winter runs. Osprey just bought a 1143 casting rod and I know he just loves it!!! As for the reel I have a Stradic on my 1082 and it is one smooth, sweet reel. Wouldn't go any lower than the Symetre.

Bob D. ran out and got his 1143 when I told him he had to quit fondling mine . It's a super rod that can handle big fish and I've found the length makes it good for floats and jigs. Any of Shimano's 4000 series spinning reels would be good. I fish it with a Stratic I got as a gift. Super setup.

I use nothing but the 1082 and a 2000 series Shimano reel for all of my spinning needs. No way is it "too light" for winter or summer steelies. I use my pair of 1082's for summer/winter steelies, chums, and silvers.

The only "issue" I've had with my 1082's was the time I accidently lined a 20+ lb chum on 8lb line while using a D*Nite for cohos. The line was more of the issue then the rod! Yes, I eventually won that battle, which tells you a lot for the 1082.

If you want to go light with your spinning gear (which is what I like to do), check out the Certified Pro and Herzog Canadian series of rods by Lamiglass. For light action rods, I prefer lami's to Loomis, because the lami's are longer and there's a greater selection.

My favorite is the Herzog 10 ft 6-10 lb light action. Its my primary summer rod and small jig rod (both summer and winter). Lami makes these rods from 9.5 to 10.5 ft rated at 6-10, 8-12, and 6-15 lb test.

For reels I like the Shimano Spirex 2000, primarily because of the paddle handle and Quick Fire, which allows casting with one hand. I know many don't like the Quick Fires because there's no anti-reverse, but I'd rather keep my off-hand in my pocket whenever possible during the winter.

Hello, have to agree with salmon-head & Parker. Love my 1082s use the stradic 2000, only drawback I see is it's a tad on the slow side for me. Wish it was a mod/fast action mine read's" moderate action", I call it the buggy-whip. Hooked a 15 lb. chum while jig fishing for steelies had to put the brakes on him and just about bent it to the cork! All in all I'd rate it an A- considering it's close to a $500.00 combo. However....you all need to come see me at the Puyallup show in the Okuma booth....they have a spinning reel that puts Shimano Stradic to shame...believe me I know...and you can almost buy two for the price of one Stadic...

What about the Shimano Sustain? I have a few Stradics, but have been thing about
jumping up to the Sustain. Any thoughts? I have also heard GREAT things about the Stella... but $500 is a bit much for a spinning reel.....

I use a Sustain 2000. Have had it for two seasons. It is smooth, very smooth. It has a good drag. The retrieve is very well balanced, which you can appreciate after casting and reeling for hours on end. There is no play in the real. I haven't had any problems. It's the best spinning reel I've ever owned. After using it for such a while, I notice things I never noticed before when I switch off to some other spinning reel. But it is spendy. I don't know if I would have bought it for myself, but I got it as a gift and I sure do enjoy it. I wish they made one between the 2000 and the 4000. As for the Stella, I agree, $500.00 gives me big time sticker shock.

I just bought a new Sedona 2000 from sportco and so far it has been a really nice reel for the price. I use it on a 9'6" Cabela's 7 wt fly rod blank that was built into a spinning rod.( I think Loomis builds the blanks for Cabelas) It is a really good setup for the price. I use 8 lb mainline, and 6-8 lb leaders. I've landed a 9 lb hen, and a 12 lb Sol Duc silver on it.

Hey now, I never said I really liked my spinning reels. I have more Shimano's laying around then I know what to do with. I usually fish one until it's trashed and then I send it back to Shimano for repair/replacement. I have a bunch of the Sedonas...er...Soldotnas...er or whatever they happened to be called at the time I buy them.

The scary thing is, is that I don't use spinning gear all that often. Especially for steelhead.

Look at the shimano 2000 spirex, smooth reel, it has 4 ball bearings. I've had it for about two seasons now and love it
