One of my life long friends( I'm talking 32years now)Stops by he's on his way home from a day of Sturgeon fishing on the Chehalis,He's got this big grin,so I'm taking the bait here...whats up Phil?
Hey I've got some eggs for ya,I say cool thanks...then he tells me the story
Their watching a Native American gentelman pulling his two sets on the river, they stop and ask him to buy some fish,he got at least 25 fish lying in the bottom of his boat.....all wild Steelhead

with the a few big boys way over 20lbs each, they make their deal and exchange their "Seven pieces of Silver".

,So he's standing there with these huge skeins of.....our future
I just say Phil, since I've known you since we were like 8,I'll cut you some slack,I won't sick the dog on ya,but I will tell you to.......choke on that fish......He Just left.......I gave the eggs a funeral.

Did I overreact .....should I have let the Dog out

It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

Os,

Your friend is still breathing, right? Then I guess you didn't overreact

Today, they're 20 lb'ers being netted, a decade ago there were probably 30 lb'ers being netted. What a shame.......

Fish on......

Hey Osprey;
Did your friend happen to ask which tribe the gentleman was from??
I remember a recent thread about Chehalis tribals not legally being able to net. The only other tribe with any ancient / accustomed fishing claim to the Chehalis being the Quinault.
Or did I misunderstand the decision?

I just went back & re-read the string about 9th district Ct decision. page 3 of this BB, "Good news, must read" posted 1/3/2001.
I guess I read more into it than it really said, all it does is deny the Chehalis ancient or accustomed fishing range and treaty fishing rights, If its quoted correctly. Doesnt do anything about their methods.
Still its a shame the blanketasses are netting in that river.
Next time smoke & eat the indian, good fishin partners are hard to find.

When I lived in the Tri-cities I fished with a guy who used to complain constantly about the declining steelhead runs at Ringold. One day he called me to tell me about a great deal he got from the indians at a roadside stand they periodically put up. We had a long discussion, and I found a new fishing partner. He still *****es about fishing, but still buys the fish.

Osprey,
hey man that was a tough position to be in, can't say what I would have done if it was me. I think you made the right call, by letting your bud know how you felt, maybe he got the message. things are definetly getting more out of hand with the tribal netting, I was recently told by a friend of mine that a 27 pound nate of quinalt origin was sold for $35.00!!. and I have been down at the pike place market in seattle recently, and there are a ton of fin clipped hatchery fish there on ice, along with and I quote "wild peninsula steelead". in the face of a poor winter run, and emergency closures on some rivers, they are still netting the rivers. makes no sense whatso-ever.

This whole situation is really sad. Here are all the anglers that want a good future in the rivers for sport fishing trying their best and getting pissed at friends etc. And the whole time it seems like the Indians just do business as usual. Anybody ever talk to the Indians? What's there thought on the whole situation? There has to be some middle ground here. You can do all the C&R you want, but what's the use if an Indian is going to put it for sale at Pike's Place? Something needs to be figured out.

The best way to get the tribes to quit netting wild Steelhead is to decrease the demand so it isn't economically viable. I don't buy seafood from the Pike Street Market fish mongers because they have (in the past) and continue to sell "wild" Washington tribal caught steelhead. When I'm down there I always let them know my opinion on the subject and it's never a quiet discussion. These places should be picketed. Maybe some light picketing is due "friends" that support killing wild steelhead.
