Looking ahead with some higher flows, might be time to dust off the plunking gear. I used to primarily fish big spin-n-glos and sand shrimp but, with the no bait rule, im going to have to step it up and try plunking with some plugs. Any advise for dropper and leader lengths? Best size of plug? Or Techniques?

A single barbless hangback will fish on a maglip. Right? Im just looking for the best leader/dropper lengths that work the best together to get the plug working good.

I'd start with 2-3 ft 20lb leader, 12"-24" 12 lb dropper. Adjust with water speed and depth. Or, even better is to use a side planer with a flat lined plug 12' behind it!

Thanks eswan! Is there a certain style of plug that meshes well with those lengths? I know maglips will run on the deeper side. Would i need to run a longer dropper to keep the plug off the bottom? Will definitely be looking into a planer board. Never played much with those either but, have seen all the og's using them for years with success.

I've seen this side planer approach at the RV park on the Cow.

I would plunk a hot shot vs a mag lip for that reason. Hot shots will dive shallow and run true in fast water. Better to put a shallow diving plug on lead in more typical steelhead water IMO. But if your in slower edge type water when the river is big you might want to change that.

2MANY, those old heads catch fish!
