Thaw out dozen herring, usually sits out, might hurry the process with cold water (only cold).
In the mean time I dissolve 1/2 cup salt (I use rock salt) to about a quart of hot water (make sure to let solution cool completely before adding herring).
You can experiment with food coloring (I use green) and if you like scents include it in the solution. I do all this the night before I'm on the water.
Experiment with the recipe to fit your needs. Also I use procure scents with the injector as I'm baiting up I'll pump the herring with as much scent as I can get in it.
Good Fishing............><>

Frozen herring I use pro-cure brine-in bite,
works great on the frozen stuff.
For fresh which I prefere,I use rock salt and cold bottled water. In the summer I add some ice to bait box while out on the water if needed.Good luck,

I tried Pro Cure`s brine n` bite last summer. At the end of the day of salmon fishing I threw my left over bait in the solution.I thought what the heck beats throwing it away.A couple of days later when I ran out of fresh bait all I had left was this bucket of brined herring. It cured it tough as a tire and with the bite stimulants fished as good as fresh herring. The package says it will last about a week. I"am the original "Ironhead" not the one from Tacoma

I don't use much salted bait but when I do usually just add a cup of rock salt to a gallon of salt water, as for scents, I met Phil Pirone (Mr. Procure) about 10 yrs. ago at a resort I worked at and he left us gallon jugs of all his scents, I tried them all and had success with each one and with various combinations but, I did best with squid or squid/anise combo. just my .02 worth, good fishing.
