I am new to the board and i searched the records for a topic on this and could fine none... so here goes. I was wondering what people thought about palmering the marabou to the hook for jigs vs. just tying the feathers directly on. I am just starting out in jig fishing and went to tie some up for the first time the other day and it occurred to me that I really didn't know which way to do it. I checked around on the net and it seems like different jig makers do it different ways. I would apprectiate any insight, pros/cons, personal preferences reagarding this issue. Thanks.

I am no expert on jigs, and I went through a variety of jigs made by just about everybody to see what worked best. I noticed that almost all of them were similar in colors but the hook was different. I too started tying jigs recently and it was just as succesful as any ones I had purchased from the store.
I used floss and cement with chenniel and some with feathers , in my experience it was the color pattern that made the difference not a brand. I mean think about it all jigs are the same in that they use a leaded hook.

I am sure there are plenty of critics out there that may dis agree but, you gotta do what you have do and if you have confidence in the product you use it will work.

I think Aerofly has it right, color is the critical factor as well as size. I've fished both a palmered jig and a conventionally tied jig and they are virtually the same in the water. Eyed jigs have been extremely effective this year.....field testing has shown that eyes have positive triggering effects on fish and can be a definite plus on a jig head.

On the subject of jigs, I am also new to the concept. Do you guys prefer the 1/8 oz or 1/4 oz? I have had good luck with the 1/4 B-Mac in Chart and Orange, but I always wonder if I am missing potential strikes by not downsizing. I have also built jigs this year with an eyed jig-head, small rubber grub body, and use a bait threader to tuck a couple 1 inch strands of yarn under the grub. This is easy to rig, looks good, and color can be adjusted to water color. Thoughts?

I prefer fur jigs to feathers. I don't know if there's a big difference, except that I did better when using fur jigs.
