summer run steelhead fishing time is approaching, we all know what suckers they are for sandshirmp. So stock up, heres how. Buy a shirmp gun Sportco has them 18-20$ Go to beach,I like Pacific,Beach.W.A. area. The sandshrimp beds are easy to see. Place shrimp gun barrel over dimple in sand, pull up on handle lift gun out of hole push handle down. And out spits the treasure LIVE SANDSHRIMP. Limit is 10dzn. a day.So bring family and friends that have fishing license. after getting limits (dosnt take long) sit down and break them in half, now you have a head&tail.Squish guts out of tail section rinse off all sand. Put pieces in large bag and keep cool. Next fill a couple of gallon jugs with ocean water. when at home put 20-25 shrimp halves in ziplock bags cover pieces with your ocean water zip close, toss in freezer! No more driving around to four different gas stations, paying 3bucks for half dead stinky shrimps.

Hmmmm....

And they don't disintegrate when they thaw out? I've found that a dead sandshrimp sitting in my bait box is as good as a live one for about an hour, then it starts to get realllll soft. Do your tails last through a whole day of fishing?

I am not so sure about the freezing part.
A few years ago I got into catching crawdads and had so many I started to freeze them.

I removed the heads, put the tails in 1/2 gallon milk cartons, filled with water and froze.

A couple weeks later I thawed out a package and boiled them.....the results were MUSH!

I have since been told that the only way to keep them firm is to cook them before freezing.

Hey Obessed; Through much trail and err, when sandshrimp are frozen in freshwater it seems to breakdown the shell. And become very soft when thawed. Not so when frozen in ocean water. As for staying firm in your bait container all day while fishing, they will hold up. Just dont let em get to warm.

Saltwater seems to be the key ... as noted in the tips section of the site ... freshwater doesn't cut it. They're not quite as good as the live thing, but they hold up alright
