What size anchor do you need to hold your self in place. Also how much rope will I need? I've got a 16 foot fiberglass hull with a 90 merc. I've heard it can be a pain. Thanks

to do it right its going to cost $$$$ they make a rake style anchor that will run $50-60 and then theres the line, rule in heavy current 100' out for every 10' down.. thats alot of line to mangage. i found 400' works.than there's the foats.. a small one for the end of your line $15 and a large one for the lift $50... then theres the lift. metal run $60 plastic run $20 Stevens marine also sells a kit that may cut cost...if you decide to use this set up i strongly suggest going somewhere quite and try it. and keep a knife handy. if that rope wraps your motor your going swiming and it will happen fast.one last tip. always go at an angle and pull from your bow when pulling up your anchor. if it sticks it will swing the bow around in an arch.. good luck and be sure to practice first a lot

If you can carry the extra weight in the boat using 10 to 20 feet of chain attached to the anchor and then attaching the rope will reduce the lenghth of rope you need to pay out. It will also help the anchor hold alot better.

The heavy plastic coated chain link placed
between your anchor and anchor line will
really save your boat in the long run as
well. Fisherman's has a video on how to
safely anchor in the Columbia and I think
the Coast Guard does as well. Sturgeon
Leader make a great "safety trip" material,
but don't use too much. Holds much better
than tie wraps or other materials, yet
won't keep tripping on you in heavy current.

I am a boat accident consultant and have been involved in a couple serious (fatal) Columbia River anchoring cases. Please email me and tell me where in the Columbia you are fishing and I can provide some info.
