Was up the Kalama today dropping some stuff off at the property and had a buddy with me who had never been up the Kalama so we went looking around. Property is up where the county road and wheyerhauser road come back together on the upper end. Saw a new fish trap up there (we know this from stopping in at the upper hatchery and asking what the funny looking thng in the river was) It is for trapping smolts to see how the natives are reproducing. Hatchery guy said not very good. Did say this year is starting out to be a good year for summers and that the winter run was decent. They have been recycling quite a few fish. while we were there, didnt see any summers just a bunch of dark winters. Did say they did last year or this yearthey are going to let 450 pairs of springers go on upriver and spawn to see if they can get a bit of stock going that way even though they are all hatchery fish. No hatchery steelhead get above the upper hatchery though. Wish they still did, really miss the days of summer fishing up there and in the Gobar. Hopefully the natives can get themselves going again. Water was coming up this morning and getting pretty off color also, so anyone heading that way might want to check with one Kalama bait and tackle or pritchards for conditions. OK I am done rambling. Have a good eve. smile

Hey Firedog I fished the Kalama on monday. It was OK at dark thirty ( 5:30 AM) but by 7:30 it was blown. So much junk floating down the river you could not pull plugs or divers. We did see alot of fish rolling along thethe sides and in the tail outs so we pitched spinners and did hit one. Thursday or friday should be great. Mayby we will cross paths out there some day. Good Luck !! Will also be fishing the Holy Waters later in the year.

Hey Kalamabama, we went up the river about 9 or so and it was well on its way out. Glad to hear you hit one. I will look for you on the upper river later in the year. Love that upper river, not many fish any more but it sure is pretty and good fishing when the fish are around.

scotty Prichards to Modrow is a good drift. Other choices are Slab hole to Modrow about half the time. Or Modrow to the take out west of I 5 .I do think that the fish are all over the river now. Early in the season the lower river was better. Good Luck !!!

I had to make a run to Kalama today, The river looked sweet! There were quite a few guys floating the river. I didnt talk to anyone that had done a float. While I was in Kalama River Bait and Tackle Italked to a couple guys that had done fairly well this morning.
I guess I will have to drag my bat up there in a week and 1/2 and get in on some of the action. If anyone sees a black Willie with OR registration numbers, Mae sure to say "hello".

The kalama isn't going to have the big return we saw last year on springers. Thats not to say there aren't fish to catch. I'm not sure but I only thought they were getting 1000 fish. It sure is a pretty river though.
