I know the drought conditions have caused a slower than normal Willamette springer bite; with some periodic breakout bites. Can anyone tell me how the lower Clack or Sandy has been in general for springers? (Preferable posted here, but otherwise would appreciate any email reports, that I won't post). I know good numbers of early summer steelhead have moved thru already. Thanks. - RT

I fished the river Clackamas on Saturday, had a good time fishing for trout (opening day and all) and we hooked and lost 2 steelhead. I have heard of one springer caught in the lower river. I imagine it is blown to high hell right now!

I have not personally caught any springers in the Clackamas so far this year. One person I fish with has 4 out of the Clackamas this year, and I saw a guide with 1 Tuesday. He said he was out all day. I have been fishing Carver to Riverside and doing very well on summer steelhead. Most are about 8-10 pounders, but we got an 18 and 16 pounder in the last couple of weeks. We have had a few fish that steamrolled us before we could get the rod out of the holder, the way they took line they could have been springers. Hard to tell if you can't land 'em. It looks like the water level jumped up today which should bring some springers into the river. I am sure it will be crowded now that the Columbia closed.
