I was wondering if you guys thought the extra money for a G Loomis rod and a Shimano Reel was worth it?
Thanks

If you can afford it.
Ive run loomis and lami and have nothing bad to say about either.
As far as reels go, the best you can afford is what I would buy. Your reel can never be to good. I have both ambu's and shimanos. Abu's have there place but for a drift rod Id go shimano. I love my calcutta.

No right answer to that Q. Only opinions. My $0.02 worth. ... At a point around $125 for a rod, the extra dollars spent have a very rapid decline in value returned per dollar spent; the higher into the stratosphere the less return on the dollar. Obvious examples are GLoomis's $300 to $400 IMX and Lamiglass' $450 Titanium 'enhanced' rod. They are less substantive than they are marketing. If you spent half the amount of the aforementioned rods and bought a Lami Esprite, All-Star Elite, or Loomy GL2 (for examples) you most likely can feel and catch as many fish with it! And not have to worry about that 'sickening' first scratch as much . Just use them comfortably and catch just as many fish. Now that applies to driftfishing and backbouncing where reasonabley good sensativity is an important factor. For most other methods such as pulling plugs, using spinners/spoons, and floatfishing I think it's ... how should I put this ... not a great use of money at all to spend more than on a regular Lami, All-Star, GL2, or even on such a value quality rod as the Berkley 'Buzz Ramsey' IM7 (only $80!). There are custom rod makers that can save you money too. ... I would say essentially the same for reels over $125. We have had this same thread debate before, and I could be wrong; for some people. Opinions? RT [ 05-08-2001: Message edited by: RT 1 ]

My 02 cents worth, I am the allstar rep, so take it with a grain of salt. I am just going to state a few facts and my personal experiences. I use to be a Loomis guy until I started working for allstar, and before Loomis sold to shimano. The allstar rods are a great value, you get so much more than youpay for. They are made of 43 million modulous graphite, made in the USA, and have a life time warranty. But they cost about a fraction of a GL-3 and have a higher modulous graphite than they do. For instance the 1141 is 129.00 retail, a 1025 is 109.95 retail and the 1263 is 129.95 so don't be afraid to try something new, and you might be pleasantly suprised. Peace Superfly

Jerry Garcia, I think the last part of your of your statement was correct, sometimes you can pay too much. I have 4 Gl3s, 3 of them the rod twists around in the handle. 2 of them the ceramic eyes have poped out. I have 5 allstar rods and I will put them up against the loomis any day. They are catching on pretty fast around here. All you have to do is hand them the allstar rod and let them try it out and they sell themselves. The guys that are buying them are loomis users. I agree with RT on his rod theory. Once you go above a GL3 or Certified Pro, the little improvement in sensitivity for the extreme rise in cost doesn't add up. I am interested in trying either an Allstar or Rainshadow rod one of these days. For reels, however, I will disagree with the $125 benchmark. By far, the best reel I have ever used is the Shimano Chronarch SuperFree. WOW!! I will be selling a couple of Calcutta's soon to move my other setup's up to the SF. For the money, a very good reel can be had for less than $125. An awful lot of guys on this board run the Shimano Curado. Good reel, great line capacity, but something about it just doesn't do it for me.

I am very familiar with All-Star rods from back in the day. I've owned between 10-12 of them and loved them. Of course, someone else loved them more than me because I had my supply stolen 3 different times. So, I'm no rep. for them, but I like the rods as you can see I've spent more than $ 1K on them. Actually, I've owned several reels that were too much reel, and yes, they are still producing better and better reels. Shimano Calais = 11 ball bearings only about $400 Line capacity kinda sucks, but if they make a larger model, I'd fork it out in a second to get one. Abu Garcia Eon and Morrum reels = I hear these are exceptional reels from the people I've talked to and the info I found out on them. Calcuttas are sweeeeet.

I've owned several Lami's and few series 1# Berkley (great rod for the price) But after having to replace a few last year I purchased a Gl-3 1143# ....I don't use the others anymore...well exept for my Fenwick float rod. It's no contest IMHO as far as reels go I love my Calcutta and my new Corado. If I could afford it I'd be using the Calcutta Te-GT....sweeeet......Os "Where are we hiding this Body"

I have a great job, I get to fish any rod I want.. three months ago I was a die hard Loomis man.. nothing but! However, the last few months we have been building blanks made by Rainshadow and I am a changed man.. They look like an IMX and feel like a GL3 for 1/2 the price.. No doubt, the best rod for the money..... As for reels, Shimano Chronarchs are the best...... no questions asked. Thanks for letting me play... TH www.thcustomrods.com

I just ordered a Okuma Avenger 2000. Was going to get a Stradic but the Okuma felt twice as smooth and was only $45, verses $130. The Okuma has 7 ball berrings and comes with an extra spool. The guy I bought it from sells everything and says the Okuma is the best for the money. I know some guys that use Okumas and they say they will never go back to Shimano spinning reels.
Anybody out there use Okuma spinning reels? What do you think?

Ive fished with loomis Gl3s for a while now and I think there great, mine are custom built (thanks to TH custom rods) he builds a quality rod, I wont buy 1 of these over the counter because I dont think the quality is still there, TH has also built me a rainshadow , and Im very excited about this one, especially when the rod builder is very sold on it. As for reels Ive had shimano reels they are very good a little spendy I also have an abu morrum great reel a little heavy and spendy, My favorite all around reel is an abu ultra cast 6500, this reel is incredible great casting, and awsome retreive power, and thats what you want in a reel, and its about 100.00$$ alot cheaper than a calcutta. and pound for pound just as strong I think.

In my op. the best FLOAT fishing setup around is a Sage 3106 that I had built for Silex centerpin. The rod bends into the cork and is soft enougth to load the Silex up. No drift beats the drift that a centerpin offers.
