Im looking at these new spinning reels, tryn to figure out which one is the best, for float, jig, spoons ect; Ive looked at srirex, dont care for it to much play in the spool, and abus cd series, and some quantoms, whats the best out there, and why I mainly fish for steelies, salmon. thanks

I'd stick with the Shimanos....maybe take a look at the Sahara, nice drag and reasonably priced. The center drags reels are nice but tend to be a little heavy and the Quantums can have sticky drags.

The reason for the 'slop' in the Spirex is due to the Quickfire feature. Reels that have the Quickfire feature are self-centering so that the Quickfire always centers back against the rod so that with a quick flip of a finger and snap of the wrist you can cast.

Shimano's are by far the best, as most people on this board will agree. If you are like me and do not like the Quickfire feature either look at Sedano at $46.99, Symetre at around $75 I believe or a Stradic at $114.99. None of these reels have the Quickfire feature and thus use a one-way roller bearing which eliminate any 'slop' in the spool.

And stay away from the Quantums!!

We have a couple of the shimano's spirex and really like em. Smoothest real we have ever used. Wife nailed a large silver in the Cow with it a couple of years ago and it handled it well. I would like to have a couple of the 4000 series just to have a little more meat behind it for strong fish.

Without exception, the best spinning reels ever made were the old ABU Cardinal reels (size 3 or 4) I own several and would not trade them for anything being made nowdays. Sometimes you'll find them on Ebay. If you find one in decent shape buy it. you won't be disappointed. Good luck!

Shimano, shimano, shimano.....for the best spinning reels, just make sure it has the Shimano name on it.

Spirex--About $60, can get it either Rear or front drag, 2000 is enough reel if you fish froma a boat. Great for lines up to 12 pound, but line has to be "soft"

Symetre--About $80.00........same comments as on the Spirex........

Be careful with Spirex! My bud has box with 5 reels, most all with broken shafts. There parts reels now for the one remaining that is still running. The shafts break because of what Ryan said. They slam back hard. He switched to Semetry's and no problems since! There not the same reel! There much smoother!!! The Spirex has a double handle that also seems to slow the retrieve. Just wasent impressed. Try a Semetry or Stradic and feel the difference.

Hey Os, where did you find the Okuma? I've been thinking of getting one of those, too. I have one of their flyreels and like it a lot.
