It all boils down to this - I'm right, everyone else is wrong, and anyone who disputes this is clearly a dumbfuck.

'drifter,

I've heard some pretty good things about the salmon and steelhead fishing opportunities in NY state. Check out the link below, looked like they had a good deal of info about the fishing up there.

Thanks Dan that was a real helpful site. Theirs a chance I might be moving up that way. But only if the fishing is good.

We have fished for salmon (Chinook) and steelhead (Skamania strain) in the Salmon and Oswego rivers of upstate New York. Fishing can be very good, very fast, as these rivers are heavily stocked and Lake Ontario produces rapid growth. Fishing in the fall for Chinook is a mob experience, and many of the fish are snagged. The scenery is unparalleled, with the leaves in the fall being stunning.

Check out the Steelhead Site. It is a midwest based website for Greatl Lakes fishing. Go to the reports section and click on the state of New York. If you are going out to fish the Salmon, I would reccomend a guide for a day to show you some water. Randy Jones is a good one and guides on the Salmon out of a drift boat, and private access for walk in fishing. Be prepared for lots of fish. The Great Lakes fishery has incredible numbers of fish. You'll probably need to down size your gear and techniques for our fish, as they can be pretty picky. The Lake Ontario fish can grow to pretty decent sizes by our standards. The Salmon river produces more than it's share of 20 pound fish. Hope this helps you out.

Se NY state is a tough bet but they do have plenty of fish in the hudson- a big Shad run in April and through the summer and into autumn there are good runs of striped bass and bluefish, though bigger blues run off the ocean beaches. The Jersey Shore end of October right up to thanksgiving can have huge runs of striper and blues. I saw a guy in a boat just off Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty one time pulling in striper after striper all in 25 inch range in the middle of the day.
