Loc: Tacoma, WA,
I had my 2000 8hp Yamaha locked with a Fulton outboard motor lock, my boats under video security and 2 Labs in the house and woke up Monday morning with the 8hp stolen from my boat. I can here the jokes now because I am from Tacoma the city of crime... but wait. While at Sportco looking for a stronger lock I started talking to a guy from Puyallup. He was there for the same reason; He informed me that the Pierce County Sheriffs Department was trying to crack a ring that has been STEALING KICKER MOTORS and sending shipments to Canada & Mexico. The thefts have all been on Sunday Night or Early Monday Morning. Just a warning to make everyone aware of this problem my new motor will be locked with a Master Motor Lock, through transom bolt lock and a Krypto Chain. mad

Good luck fishing, see ya on the water.

Scott

scott,

I have heard that Ruger, Smith & Wesson, and H&K all make reliable anti-theft devices. Damn thieves......these people make me sick.

And nice attitude, Saltine. Were you looking to rub a little salt in the wounds? Should a guy really have to bring his kicker in every time? I hope some SOB steals your car next time it's parked outside, it might teach you a lesson in sympathy.

If you couldn't tell by the rolleyes that I was upset for the guy, you could have emailed for clarification before puking.

Hope your day turns around for you.

OR, you could have been clearer in making your post. Let's ask RiverLiver. What did you think Saltine meant?

Saltine is a cracker, isn't it?

Not looking for anything. It just seemed to me that your post to RL seemed unsympathetic. If it wasn't meant to be, I apologize.

Like saltine said... take it off if you're not using it. all locks and chain do is keep the majority of people honest. the criminals will spare no expence in taking your motor including pulling the back end of your boat off.

I can relate to your problem I have had an outboard stolen a few years back in tacoma. since then I always take it off. havent lost one since. Knock on wood.

Have to agree with Dan on this one....Salt... My might want to take a look at what you post before you think others will take it the same way you did.....I saw the same thing DAN did and it made me feel the point was missed.... It's bad days when you have to put a motion sensor on the boat to keep would be punks from getting your hard earned $$$$! RIVER was just making a hard learned leason known to those that just might make the same mistake. Easy friends....plenty of room on the waters for all of us.... laugh

Thanks for the support guys! I fish 2-4 times a week, so taking the motor off would be a real hassle, plus I would probably wake my neighbors up @ 4:00 AM. I posted the original thread so that maybe someone else could learn about this ring of thieves and not have to go through the hassle and out of pocket $$$$$$ that I have!

PS: Saltine I need a hand removing my 70HP and putting it in the garage..... Ya busy tonight? laugh

Hope we all have a great Spring and Summer Fishing season!

Hello, Scott, can you imagine taking off our outboards everytime we weren't fishing? We would be spending more time doing that, than putting our gear away or fishing...not including how clumsy I can be, I would probably drop one or two of my kickers. I used to do this feat when I only had one kicker to use between boats and it is a real hassle. I just keep em double locked and bolted on, even though we all know that this will just slow them down. If they really want it they will take the whole boat and trailer, (actually had an employee of mine lose his in Tacoma this way).
Remembering to keep the insurance policy current and paid up helps too.
I'm sure I will be seeing you on the June 1st at the Point or other areas nearby....have to get the jigs and plugs sorted out for this weekend. Do you know if fresh herring is available yet?

Give me a shout, I will either be in the Campion or the Alumaweld.

I am not sure that much of what we do really slows em down. Lost a 50 hp merc pump off a boat a few years back in Centrailia. Had 4 1/2 SS bolts with threads smashed and a lock. Thieves left behind a 1/2 breaker bar + a 3 ft cheater. They just broke the bolts off and cut the lock.

Lost a kicker that was off the boat and in the locked shed so that option dosen't seem to help alot either.

Riverliver .. bummer deal.

Many of the kickers have charging systems hooked up to the battery switches. Some even have TR-1's installed. They would be a major pain to remove all the time. Just keep good insurance and take pics of everything you own. Rods are included in many cases. Mine are thru Allstate. If its a regular 2 stroke with no hookups except the transom screws and a fuel line then I could see taking it off and having a rolling stand to get it in the garage or shed. Either way it does suck that this happens. Sorry to hear about your loss.

What a rotten deal!

One other tip we should all remember is keep your boat tucked away out of sight when not in use (garage or shop). I drive by many places across western Washington where I regularly see boats left out in the great wide open, motors in plain view. This is nothing more than an invitation to the pond scum of humanity to have at your boat.

If you are diligent about keeping your boat out of sight and still experience a theft, look at local suspects, neighbors, punk high schoolers that live in the area. I had a friend lose his kicker motor off his sled and he was religious about keeping evrything locked and out of sight. Upon talking with the sheriff, they reasoned it had to be someone local who knew the boat was there. The sheriff knew of some punk kids he'd dealt with down the road. So, he paid them a visit, they got nervous, he did a search....and found the motor!

food for thought.
