Any suggestions on what my length of line should be between my split shots and the jig in this clear water. Thanks.

I'm probably going to get ripped for this reply, but since it's a rather slow day, I'll respond:

Normally, the two ways I've rigged jigs are:

Dink float on mainline. Mainline to either in-line slinkey or hunk-o pencil lead on swivel. About a 2-3 foot leader with jig on the end. Move dink float up and down line as necessary. The fish will rise for the jig. Use a heavier/ligher jig depending on water conditions.

The other way is to use something on the lines of a Thill Float and a jig directly on your mainline. No other weight needed. Move float to depth as needed. Again, use properly weighted jig for water conditions. I'm too cheap to use the Thill Floats, so I opt for the cheap dink floats and option #1.

The only time I've used split shot is when I've floated bait or plastic worms. More often then not, I'll just shorten up the leader a bit and not use any split shot. If the water is dirty, the fish don't seem to mind the in-line slinky or pencil lead within a couple of feet from the bait. Kind of a booneyfloat method of using bait.

I'm in the straight mainline crowd on this one. Using the turbo masters or even a small dink or cork with 8-10# mainline all the way to your jig will do the trick in low clear conditions. It helps to have a light rod and spinning reel for this setup.

In the winter when fishing for nates with a pink worm on a jighead or something like that I've had good success with straight fireline, a dink, a 1/4 oz split or two about 3-4 feet above the jighead.

Keep it simple.

I have to agree with Bruce, go with a jig that matchs the water your fishing. A heavier head for higher faster water and for lower clear water a lighter head jig with a properly matched float and you shouldn't need shot. Some of the Thill floats you can add weight to the stem of the float which works well.

Hey thanks for the info guys. I did really well on green river winter runs with the number 1 setup that parker described. I was just wonderin if it would spook the fish. Thanks again.
