Does anyone know any good fly patterns that work on coho in rivers (not tidal areas)?

I've caught a few on black skunks with red tails (I'm a newbie - so sorry if I don't get the names right) and black dredgers. What about black woolly buggers?

I've heard good things about black yarn flies. What are they?

Thanks!

Popsicles! And mariboos! Dont forget ESL, egg suckin leeches. Normally either a traditional swing or cast into deep slow water and strip line. Of coarse I dont claim to be a FLY guy. When the fish are in real thick and biting well sometimes I'll bring a bug rod the next day. Catching a fish on a fly rod does give me more feeling of accomplishment.........I'd rather just catch fish all the time.............with gear! laugh I guess what I'm saying is the high cool I get from gear fishing is still good enough! Got to love our adiction!!!!!!!!!!

try egg paterns or tenny nymphs somtimes they work on moving fish. fish them with a floating line, 9 foot leader and split shot about 18" above the bug. Fish it on a dead drift tapping bottom every once in a while.

Glo-bugs (egg pattern) work pretty good on silvers. I think they just like small offerings. Flash flies are at the opposite end of the spectrum, but they seem to work well on aggresive fish. Make sure you are getting your fly down in front of the fish. That was my mistake when I first started fly fishing. If you don't feel it tapping the bottom then you aren't using enough lead.

Make sure the flies have lead eyes. Coho really seem to like the fly dancing around in that up and down jigging motion. Lead eyes allow the fly to do just that.

Hi: The current hot fly in the north is called "Dancing Girl" A large central core of hot pink marabou, with an outer shell of royal blue marabou and a few strands of silver sparkle yarn tied over. Tied on a 2/0 offset short shank beak point barbless.

In rivers, even tidal areas, especially in the clear water we have now, think small and sparse for salmon; kings, silvers, pinks, whatever. You can hold a very large fish on size 6-10 flies. This has been known by California anglers in the Smith River for years. Haig-Brown wrote about the success of small flies on salmon in Fisherman's Fall in 1964.
The primary advantage of small, sparse patterns is that when tied on a short leader they will sink readily. If you employ weighted eyes, small bead chain is usually enough. The other important fact is that you rarely -- if ever -- will snag a salmon when you employ flies with small hooks. The bites will be solid and the hookups will be in the jaw.

Good Luck,

Les Johnson
