Can I assume that since we have seen such large runs of pretty much the entire spectrum of Salmon, not to mention the SIZE of these monsters, that it will equate to a big run of larger than normal Steelhead this winter?
Is this logical or wishful thinking?

I've heard that when ocean conditions are good for salmon they're not as good for steelhead. Doesn't make sense to me - seems like favorable ocean conditions would favor steelhead as well a salmon. Anyone else know anything about this?

I would call it wishful logic. It makes sense that whatever benefits salmon growth and survival would also benefit steelhead growth and survival since they both live in the same ocean. But things are never that simple. Feeding patterns, prey base, migration routes, etc. may be different between fish species. So more productive conditions for salmon doesn't necessarily translate into more and bigger steelhead.

But the summer steelhead counts over Bonneville Dam in July and August of this year were the highest ever recorded. That's a good sign......
