What ya fishin' for, salmon, steelhead? The river had dropped and cleared quite a bit by Wednesday. The weekend was just perfect. I hope it rains and gets some color back before Saturday. I was thinking of going up to the Vedder, but as hot as the Sky has been the last two times I've been, I might just stay local.

I was hoping to bump into a few silvers, but as you can tell by the name, steelhead is the game. Just wanted to try to find out what the river was like before I drove up there from Ft Lewis Sat AM. I was thinking about the drift from Sultan down to Ben Howard. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated. Is there anyone who runs a shuttle service up there? Beats driving two trucks. Thanks again.

you may want to keep a close eye on clarity and level before you come up, its been rainin hard and steady all night, the hydrograph is almost verticle at 3,000, it was 1890 last night.

It must have cleared quick. A partner and me fished yesterday. The river looked good until about 1pm then puked. The Wallace was all blown and the Sky was coming up quick. We fished at Buck Island and I managed too pull a 19" jack coho. Missed a couple of others. My partner did get smoke checked by a chum at the trestle though. Bring on those puppies.

Fished Benhoward to Monroe in the PM. River had great color, was running a little faster than norm. Picked up several nice silvers at the Hershey hole, backbouncing eggs. We had the river to ourselves by 4:00pm. I couldn't have asked for better conditions. Good weather good river great fishing!

I noticed the same thing too...totally oblivious to a trailer being backed within inches of their legs. Maybe you should point a out the tire marked smashed dead humpies on the bank you explain to them what a boat, trailer and truck can do. [ 10-23-2001: Message edited by: RPetzold ]

Goobers? you mean Snaggers don't ya' those witless knotheads that do their snagging across from the launch area are really a sad lot too! We must have had quite an influx of foreign types lately, is all I can figure out.I can't believe how many sorry pinks I've seen them with. Even worse they are teaching their kids to be snaggers too! I've talked with several of them over the past month and I'm sure that most don't have a license or clue as to the regulations, nor do they give a rip. The whole area around Sultan is starting to remind me of the Vedder. if you've been there you know what I'm talking about. Thank God there are places they don't go to snag, and that's anywhere farther than a 5 minute walk from the highway or parking lots.Ok I'm through with my rant, now!

Yeah, the boat launch maggots. Wish the warden would make a few trips during the pink and silver runs. Ive also seen alot of "dads" teaching there kids that its alright to keep a snagged fish. =(

Never understood why guys stand at the launch and fish, the drift from the other side of the river is so much better and there in enough bank for everyone.

Just thought that I'd add something that I saw that made me continue with my belief that things never cease to amaze me. I saw a snagger pull a pink in half dead, up onto the shore and start punching the hell out of it. He must have punched the thing ten times in the head? Made me want to go and kick the moron in the head and send him floating down the river. Dude not only has no idea of how to "catch" a fish but also now idea of how to handle it when caught!!! What is going on out there? These people had to learn that this behavior was acceptable somewhere. Were there that many idiots training their offspring these techniques in the past generation? I am 31, have fished my whole life and have NEVER seen the crap I have seen going on in the last two months anywhere or anytime. All I know is if my ol man ever saw me doing anything like what I have seen going on I am sure that my back side would still be cringing at the thought. I guess the best we can do know is teach our children the right things to do and use the idiots out there as examples of the WRONG thing to do. Should be pretty easy to find those examples!! Things that make you go HMN.

You guys crack me up, you have nothing better to do than to piss and moan about people catching fish in a place where it's legal to do so, I'm sure people snag fish there, but where don't they. When water conditions dictate I fish there as I did a couple of weeks ago, great day several pinks two chrome silvers and a big nasty king (ALL IN THE MOUTH) and was still was home to see the Huskies, by the way the game warden was there, I talked to her for quite a while (what a cutie!!) It's ok to fish below the train bridge in fact most launches have a sign that sez PUBLIC FISHING. Over the years I've opted not to launch my boat and fish that area on several occasions and never thought twice about it. Nor will I think twice in the future. I fished there as a kid and I'll fish there as an old fart, so I guess I'm one of those goobers/ snagger/ witless knot heads/boat launch maggots you all are referring to and so are two of my fishing partners who are pretty well known for their fishing skills. I can't wait to fish with those witless knot heads this weekend.
As for fishing the bar on the Sky being better, not in high water. I've fished there several times in high water "nothing" jump over to the seam on the other side a much different story.
Launch your boats above the bridge where fishing is closed. And if someone is fishing there, run him or her over, it's ok because they're breaking the law to begin with.

That back eddy under the trestle is why they named cracker bar "Cracker Bar"
Who the hell wants to cast around people putting in or taking out their boats. Its a big river with tons of access. That pool ranks really low on the list of good holes on the sky. sorry for my ranting about the trestle maggots... just my 2 cents...

You guys are absolutely right about the snaggers squating on the boat ramp. It's a boat ramp,Brad. You're welcome to "fish" it as far as I'm concerned but I won't be launching in the Sultan to avoid moving you off the ramp.Move it or lose it. These turkeys are standing damn near shoulder to shoulder and are snagging.Pathetic.

I suppose I could talk $hit about the Snoqualmie if I ever find the high bridge ramp taken over by snaggers. Why does the subject bother you anyway?

OK.....back to the real subject.... Having put in untold hours on this river (just ask my wife!) is it worth driving 45 min to fish it tomorrow? Not where and with what but is it blown? Non-stop rain on the Eastside for last 2 days...I'm guessing it's out but an honest assessment would be appreciated. C'mon guys, let's act like gentlemen.

No, it's not blown, and as a matter of fact it's not too bad. I was suprised it wasn't. It's pretty stained, but (as of 9:00a.m. today, anyway) not muddy at all. In case don't know about this link, it's the best bet for checking out what shape the streams are in. http://wa.water.usgs.gov/realtime/rt_latest_graph.html

leadslinger thats nice of you to care about me having a place to fish, but where I fish there's no way for a boat to launch so I'm ok . You and bank walker should be ok til next year because me and another tressel maggot will be talking our drift boats to the OP for the winter, so you'all can run your sleds up and down that river all you want. have fun and good luck!!
My advice is to be nice to the tressel maggots, I AM, because one of our rigs have to stay.
(SAVE THE TRESSEL MAGGOTS!!! DON'T RUN THEM OVER WITH BOAT TRAILERS!!! THEY HAVE LITTLE LARVE AT HOME TO FEED)

Hit the Sky Sunday afternoon BenHoward to Monroe. River is running fast but good color and depth. Picked up the biggest Silver I've ever caught 20+lbs a little colored but what a great fight! Thought for a while I was going to have to pull anchor and follow him down stream, might have been interesting seeing as thought the only place my 12yo son has rowed is on the lake or calm waters. (Driftboat) tried doing the Chum thing in the slot by Benhoward no luck, they should be there

FNB,I really don't have any problem with you or where you fish.I believe in sharing the river.I just don't think I should have push a bankie out of my way to launch a boat on a boat ramp. Sometimes I launch in the Sultan, sometimes the Sky.Where I launch on this rough ramp depends on river levels and flow and not courtesy to someone who wants to fish on the launch. If I were bank fishing here,I would get out of the way when someone is launching and then fish when they are gone.I now suspect that you probably do this, others fishing here don't seem to want to move out of the way.I get a little short with these inconsiderate types, that's all. Good luck to you.
