Schwing Man,
Welcome to the fray! Here's a few tips for exisitng here...
First, stupid questions are generally OK, and there are lots of very knowledgeable folks here that are happy to share their experience. However, be very careful about asking for specific spots to fish. Most guys (and gals) will tell you the brand and size of their underwear that they fish in, but wouldn't tell you the river they fished, much less the particular hole.
Second, stupid comments are less well-received, unless they are funny rather than just stupid. Try to bring anything to the table, even if it is just a bit of good-natured humor.
Unless you have lots of extra time and typing energy, stay out of the Ford vs. Chevy, Lamiglas vs. Loomis, balsa floats vs. foam floats, Izor vs. Maxima vs. Trilene vs. whatever line, and Schmidt vs. Pabst debates. While entertaining, they continually run in circles, eventually spiralling down to the same two or three folks that finished up the same argument last time. At least they usually provide some excellent humor, but not much in the way of useful information.
Lastly, spend some time reading posts, especially the longer ones, and you can get a feel for how it happens around here, and also for the personalities and idiosyncracies of the individual posters. This will help you to know just how much you can believe what a person is saying, and how to recognize their humor (or lack thereof). Also, any question or comment that is at least somehow related to an on-the-river experience seems to be better received than one from a "keyboard fisherman".
Have fun, as that should be at least as important, if not more important, than getting good info.
FishMute8,
I like your idea about a steelhead dictionary, especially since most of the terms are made up on the river and don't make it into books while they are all over places like this. I'll start a new thread with a call for more definitions.
Fish on...
