Just got my issue of STS and could not help but admire the nice cover pic. Then I noticed the hook location appears to be outside of the mouth.
Is it just my imagination or is this fish technically foul hooked. Release or bonk assuming its a brat?

Was just reading my STS this morning and noticed the same thing. It appears that the jig is clearly hooked on the outside of the bottom jaw.

Not hooked inside the mouth, gotta let it go!

The fish was fair-hooked and landed. The jig fell out and was placed on the lower jaw for the photo.

Do you really think Nick would put a snagged fish on the cover?

Let's pretend your fishing with a bobber and you do catch a brat but the hook went through the outside of the jaw rather than the inside. If fish are few and far between do you keep it or let it go? I know I've caught fish on the outside of the mouth when they strike the hook wrong, especially if I'm running a stinger hook behind a worm. I've also seen the original hook come out and the fish is landed by the stinger which happened to hook into the fish during the fight. So if it's not a native can it still be wacked?

Those d@mned elitists! Following the rules and all that kind of BS!

Ruining all our fun. mad

I'd keep it. The Indians are just going to net it anyway, or some fly geek will catch and release it while it's sitting on a redd and hold it out of the water for 27 minutes for a roll of film. Or some other c-n-r fanatic will catch it fourteen times, all but insuring its impenmding death. Or it will just spawn on top of some other redd and ruin both nests. Maybe the next time the river floods it will swim into my yard and bite someone I love, or a pet, or a neighbor.

Quick! Whack it fast before it gets away!!

Oops...attack of schizophrenia. Or is it multiple personality disorder?

I don't know.

Fish on...

Todd.

(I think.)

Nick would never put a foul hooked fish in his Magazine.
While looking at the cover pic and River info on page 3, it looks like Nick needs to get rid of the Ebonics spell check program, (Wynouchee River confused ), I thought it was Wynooche or the Nooch.

doesn't say inside the mouth, it states the fish voluntarily taking the bait so it missed and got hooked on the outside of the (jaw) still part of the mouth. now if your in oregon it states attempting to hook the fish other than in the mouth.

I quess my problem with the pic is the apperance. When the jig was replaced on the fish a little more care should have been used so as not to alude to a "not quite perfect" hookup. Appearances are 90% of what the not fishing public is going to judge sportfishers on. Not intent.

I suppose a letter to the editor on my part would be in order.

I always thought a legal hookup was from the gill plates forward. Has this changed?

Not picking on 'ya DD, but I don't think the "non fishing public" is going to notice this mag, or even care or know about hook placement if they do see the photo. My $.02 rolleyes

Too late.

A little digital correction on that cover and the jig could be put anywhere. For a price...

Desertdog,

Don't cave in. I think your question was fair and very specific. If it derailed to another "snagging" thread, it is not your fault.
