After reading Bobs fishing tips section I started to make some rags. They are cheap to make and I caught two silvers on them. The backer rod is used for buoyancy to help keep the hook off the bottom and it also holds the yarn. The yarn adds color, holds scent, and gets caught up in their teeth. Since I could not find white backer rod I just used gray. What is the purpose of the white backer rod over the gray backer rod? Does it really matter? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

i read not to long ago that they don't make the white backer rod anymore so it looks like your stuck with the grey, unless you can find some secret stash of white that someone has. laugh

What I use is the sheet form of the foam (picked it up at boeing surplus years ago)

cut the foam sheet to the thickness you want say 1/4, 3/8 or 1/2 and then take a piece of copper or aluminum tubing the right diameter, sharpen it, and punch the foam like a cookie cutter.

There is no limit to the diameters and sizes of bodies you can make

Okay, stupid question.

What is backer rod? From the impression I get, it sounds like you guys use it to make "aero fly" type rigs.

Be gentle to the uninitiated one.

Backer rod is a closed cell foam cord. If you go to a hardware store it can be found labeled as "caulk saver" it was originally used as filler for cracks to be caulked, like around windows. It is a very bouyant material and someone, a while back, discovered it is a good starting material, for drift lures, such as rags or aero-flies.

The white is most popular for rags and aero-fly type lures, though the other colors work well, such as the black, blue or gray and pink(which I haven't been able to find). The white can be found on the larger bundles, usually at a contractor outlet. 3/8 is a good size, though thinner and thicker also work.

Does anyone know where I can get the pale pink backer rod? If you don't want to give up your supplier publicly, an email would be great.

I picked up a hugh spool of the pink/red 3/8" backer rod last week.. I bought it at Willamatte Gray Stone, and was told they cant get it any more (in that color) that's why I bought the enitre spool. laugh
I also bought about 100" of the 1/2" in the same red/pink color..
If you would like some just shoot me an email...

Thanks all for the offer on the white backer rod. I have about a zillion tied up in gray and will use them until they are gone. I was mainly interested in knowing about the differant colors and if people have used other colors besides white. If the rain stops maybe I will get a chance to use some of them.

Just to clarify!!!!
The White is flame proof and is used in road construction due to the high heat associated with paving. All others are made for sealing and have different crush rates depending on the color. They are Flame resistant for building codes but wont withstand the constant heat.
